The State Historical Society of Missouri
found this wonderful site while trying to find old roads. there is a wealth of info here. I would imagine most states have sites like this.

here is a link to historical newspapers from missouri going back to before the CW just search the paper by typing in key words and see everything that pulls up unbelievable the knowledge i have learned since i found it
