Can anyone trust them after this?
I don't see a reason to be any more scared of them. The article says the guy ate mushrooms that he had collected in 2022 and dried for later use. He then ate them after cooking by boiling for five minutes. Seems like undercooking may have been the problem. I don't know if they'd even have time to fully rehydrate in five minutes, much less cook. There have been other cases of people being sick or dying from morels, and the common theme seems to be that they were raw or undercooked.
 

recently, there was a woman who died after eating sushi which had raw morels in the sushi roll. Not a good idea.

Learn the basics of foraging anything.

Tolerance to the item
If a person can't tolerate it-leave it!

Proper cooking of things that require it should be noted-yet some like things raw and are happy campers consuming them as the risk levels are very low-moderate.

Sushi is one that is consumed by the ton it seems-yet one bad ingredient can make it deadly.

Boiling anything in a rolling boil will kill all bacteria, bacteria or any other contaminants do not survive temps over 165. Maybe he accidentally ingested an amanita mushroom mixed in.

Bacteria isn’t the only food borne issue. Some plants have natural toxins that are deadly. Those aren’t bacteria anymore than arsenic, cyanide, etc.

I have foraging friends that pick and consume false morels, but only the stem. I’m definitely not recommending this, and would never consider it myself.

He was experienced on foraging mushrooms.
The differences between a Moral and an Amanita are easily identified.

In the interview with the Mycologist indicated that "they didn't know" if the true morels contained hydrazine.
Though hydrazine accumulates in the body over time.
So if this guy consumed morels for 30+ yrs it's possible that an undercooked batch was his last batch.



False morels is a toxin known as monomethyl hydrazine (MMH),
Black morel mushrooms have four lookalikes, and three of them are considered toxic

The good news: The three toxic wild mushrooms, Verpa Bohemica, Genus Gyromitra, and Verpa conica, are pretty easy to tell apart from true morels, if you know what to look for.

 

My first two wives died from eating POISON MORELS!!! My third wife died of a CONCUSSION :( she would not EAT THE POISON MORELS !!! :)

I certainly can.
what changed? A video?
Did the video offer the toxicology results?
Did it describe the sanitation conditions of the meal preparation?
Did it suggest that adding mushrooms to a rice and mushroom dish could create any condition?
Heck I read an article on how hazardous rice can be and becomes a food borne illness if the temperature is allowed to drop. Which it always does after cooking.
Here, look it up. Time you're done studying it you might think the deceased brewed quite a hazard with multiple potential nasties.

Handed a co-worker a morel sample and told him they should be cooked first.
He had it chewed and swallowed shortly after. He didn't get sick or die shortly.

People treat mushrooms science like dinosaurs. Oh we really don't know what we know about what we don't know!

Morel mushroom eating rules.
Know they are actual morels.
Do not consume with or after consuming alcohol.
Never dive in with both hands and be a glutton. Always start with a small amount. YOU CAN develop a problem with mushrooms between seasons or even shorter intervals. Volume will factor when/if you do.

As with ANY mushroom that passes the spore test for what it is suspected to be , reserve a sample before you eat it JUST IN CASE YOU GET ILL OR DIE.

I prefer morels as a garnish. Never a meal.
I have eaten self dried morels multiple years dried with no ill effect.
No not by stuffing my self with them.

So here comes a media report on a man that died because he ate morels.
Well he did eat morels...

How many other last meals of people who died on the same day were mentioned?
And were they not all 100% fatal?

Maybe.

Did we note the study of his drying method , or were samples of his morels shown to have not been preserved properly?

We also don't know the condition the packaged rice was in.
Had it dampened in the package? Undercooked?
Did Indian meal moths make holes in the package?
