The other payroll that was stolen from the army occurred in 1858. This was the year that A.S. Johnston and 2,500 men were sent to Utah to put down a "rebellion." False information. The army was in Utah until the Civil War broke out, about 2 years. The Army never said how much was stolen, but that the lone gunman was on horseback going south on the west side of Utah Lake. His horse broke a leg and he was on foot till dark. As you can imagine there was a BIG posse of Calvary after him. There were enough of them to surround the area of tall sage brush till morning. At first light the outlaw came at them shooting and in return was shot more than a few times by the posse. The payroll wasn't on him and they searched all over, but figured he buried it somewhere. Don't forget that coins sink deeper each year, especially gold.
In the book, "Some Dreams Die" the author figures the area was 12 miles north of Elberta and near a resort called Mosida.
