I'M GONNA TRY TO LIGHTEN THE AIR A BIT, IF THIS "COPY AND PASTE THING WORKS ON THIS.
FORGIVE MY ALL CAPS, DEBBIE ISN'T HERE TO EDIT THIS, SO I DID WHAT I HAD TO DO.
JACKSON WAS AN OLD PROSPECTOR THAT STARTED OUT ON HIS OWN AT THE AGE OF TWENTY YEARS, WITH LITTLE MORE THAN A COPPER PAN, A PICK AND SHOVEL, A RIFLE AND HIS BEST FRIEND, A YOUNG DONKEY, NAMED CINDY LUE.
AFTER SIXTY YEARS OF PROSPECTING AND MINING IN ALASKA, HE DECIDED TO BUILD A LARGE PROSPECTORS LODGE, AND HELP TEACH A YOUNGER GENERATION.
ONE OF THE YOUNG VISITORS, NAMED JOE, DECIDED TO START A CONVERSATION WITH THE OLD GENTLEMAN. THE CONVERSATION WENT SOMETHING LIKE THIS.
JOE: SIR, I COULDN’T HELP BUT NOTICE THE BIG STUFFED BEAR IN THE
MIDDLE OF THE ROOM. DID YOU SHOOT IT?
JACKSON: WELL SON, THERE IS A LONG HISTORY BETWEEN ME AND HIM.
HE WAS STUFFED SIXTY YEARS BEFORE THIS LODGE WAS HERE. I RECON I SHOULD START OUT WITH HOW WE MET. ME AND CINDY LUE WERE OUT ON THE NORTH RIDGE OF THE MOUNTAIN STRAIGHT IN FRONT OF THE LODGE. WE HAD BEEN OUT FOR A COUPLE O’ WEEKS. SUPPLIES WERE RUNNIN’ LOW AND WE WERE IN NEED OF CLEAN DRINKIN’ WATER. I NOTICED A GOOD FLOW OF WATER ROLLIN’ OVER THE EDGE OF A WHITE OUTCROP. IT WAS ABOUT FIFTY TO A HUNDRED PACES UP THE SIDE OF THE RIDGE, SO I GRABBED BOTH WATER BAGS AND LEFT CINDY AT THE BOTTOM TO HAVE SOME OF THE GRASS. I KNEW THAT SHE WOULDN’T STRAY FAR FROM THE FOOD. FOR SOME DAD BURN REASON I FIGURED THAT, TWO BAGS OF WATER AND A RIFLE WOULD TOO MUCH.
I KNEW BETTER, BUT I LEFT IT IN THE HOLSTER, STRAPPED TO CINDY’S BACK.
JOE: IS THAT CINDY TIED UP TO THE HITCHIN’ POST, OUT FRONT?
JACKSON: YEP. SHE DIED OF OLD AGE. I WENT TO DIG A GRAVE FOR HER AND ABOUT TWO FEET DOWN I HIT THAT BIG NUGGET IN THE DISPLAY CASE. ANYWAY, ONE THING LED TO ANOTHER AND WELL, I HAD HER STUFFED TOO. SHE STILL DOESN’T WANDER OFF.
JOE: I WONDERED WHY SHE DIDN’T MOVE WHEN I CAME IN.
JACKSON: BACK TO THE WATER THAT I WAS FETCHIN’. WHEN I GOT UP TO THE WATER HOLE ON THE RIDGE, THERE WAS NUGGET.
THAT’S THE OTHER NUGGET IN THE DISPLAY CASE. THOSE TWO NUGGETS WERE SPECIAL. WHILE I WAS BENT OVER THAT WHITE BOWL, WATCHIN’ THAT NUGGET ROLL AROUND IN THE CURRENT, I COULD SEE MY REFLECTION IN THE WATER AND THE BLUE SKY ABOVE ME. IT TURNED DARK KINDA SUDDEN LIKE, AND I COULD FEEL HOT BREATH ON MY BACK …. WELL, I GOT TO FIGURIN’ HOW I COULD GET DOWN THE RIDGE, QUICK ENOUGH TO STAY AHEAD OF THAT BEAR AND NOT SPOOK CINDY LUE. SHE HAD MY RIFLE AND IF SHE TOOK OFF, I’D HAVE TO OUT RUN HER TO GET THE RIFLE. MY CHANCES DIDN’T ADD UP IN MY FAVOR. I GLANCED OVER MY SHOULDER TO SEE WHERE MY FIRST STEP WOULD BE, AND RIGHT THEN, THAT DAD BURN BEAR WENT..
RRRRROOOAAARRR! …. … WELL, I WET MY TROUSERS.
JOE: THAT AIN’T NUTHIN’ TO BE ASHAMED OF. IF I WERE IN THAT PREDICAMENT I THINK I WOULD HAVE DONE THE SAME!
JACKSON: I DON’T THINK YOU UNDERSTOOD. I WET MY TROUSERS WHEN I WENT…
RRRRROOOAAARRR! OH! DAD BURN IT. I DID IT AGAIN!
