$5,000.00 Coin Cache Discovered by Accident
Three Minnesota Landscape workers struck it rich on a job recently when they uncovered about 375 U.S. coins dated 1822 to 1930 cached beneath a concrete wall they were removing. One of the workers was removing pieces of concrete with a tractor, when he noticed a coin, which he pointed out to a co-worker. He investigated and soon "started finding 'pennies' and more 'pennies.'" A third worker joined in the dig and came up with a leather pouch containing a California territorial gold coin.
Local residents recall a story of an old recluse who once lived on the property where the landscaping was being done, and speculated that he buried the coins shortly after the bank crisis at the beginning of the Great Depression. A Minnesota Attorney said that ownership of the coins, valued at more than $5,000.00, will be disputed between the owner of the land and the men who found them, if the true owner cannot be located after a reasonably diligent effort.
