Thing that got me wondering is I see a star in the second pic of the face.

I also thoughht I saw an anchor in the last face pic

Well it definately has a Scovill Waterbury back mark, which one is hard to tell, but from what I can see it looks closest to ones from about 1860/61, so that could be a good sign, except that it's coming from me, rather than one of our button specialists.

Yes, there's definitely an anchor (as baspinall mentioned), along with the eagle holding it, with upswept wings! Military, I'd say certainly, federal navy. But making out exactly which would require giving my eyes a rest, but it's some variety of Albert's NA112.
The rustiest spot (by your pinky in the fourth pic) is roughly the top, from there you can see enough of the horizontal lines to get it correctly oriented.

I too thought I saw an anchor on it. I would also lean towards Navy. nhbenz, good call.

Within the "rustiest spot" you can see the eagle's head (looking up) and top of it's left wing (sort of the pointed "elbow" of it's wing) I'd incorrectly said 2nd photo, when I meant the 2nd photo of the face of it (the 4th photo as it appears on my iPad). That's where I started on the face.
They sure needed enlarging though!
If you google Albert's NA 112 (images) you'll see one to match up the details.

Seems right. Mid 1800's also dates right on with the house. I'll probably give it to the land owner seeing as he was an ex military guy. He even wanted out shotgun shell brass which I willingly gave him.
