Found this in my front yard this morning, its 1-3/8" long and 7/8" wide at the top. It has some green and silver paint on it. The back looks like it was a pin back. I haven't found any markings on it. It looks a lot like a military uniform DI. Any help would be great, thanks Dean

boondocker, these are harness related and usually have two pointed prongs on the back. After I get some work done I'll pull a few out which match your's and you can see what the backs looked like. They are neat I think, and have usaually been found at colonial and post colonial sites.

boondocker, I pulled out a few of the harness shields I've dug to give you an idea of the variety of shapes and the way they were mounted.

The proper name for this piece is not "saddle shield" or "harness shield." Saddle shields actually had a slot in them, and they are larger pieces that went on the Saddle. I get no hits for the term "harness shield."

This piece is actually a harness boss.

I ID'ed my own find after getting no hits in the "what is it" section in this post:

Photo of Gen. Sherman on his horse:

I try to use the term correctly, since this is not a piece that went on the saddle!

Either way, there's your ID.

Best Wishes,

Well, I could call half of what I find "horse furniture" and that would tell absolutely Nothing about its specific use. Maybe I could call every button or Civil War belt buckle I find "people furniture" and let it go at that. :tongue3:

You can call it horse furniture if you like--just don't call it a saddle shield, since it did not go on a saddle.

In the UK these went on belts, maybe its a sexfoil? (other than it would need to be Late Medieval)

Point is, it can attach to a piece of leather, anywhere on the horse, so safer to say furniture or decor.

Yeap, many posted in the past.

I have found many variants, but they were used on many different pieces of leather, I have seen some on the martingale of heavy horses.

Buckles,
I thought I'd seen that picture of Sherman somewhere before. I found it again in a book I have of Matthew Brady photographs. Thanks for waking up an old man's memory.
