Found this on a trial in East Texas, where I have found some military stuff in the past. This is about the size of a nickle (perhaps a little bigger and thicker) it is two to three times heavier than a nickle.

I used a microscope camera to take the photos, so it is as close as I can get. I don't see any defining details, but maybe someone out there knows something more!

Thank You in advance for your time? P1030046.JPGP1030044.JPGP1030042.JPGP1030040.JPGP1030038.JPGP1030037.JPGP1030036.JPGP1030034.JPGP1030033.JPGP1030031.JPG

It looks like a lead seal. See if you can find any iron on the side where the wire was attached.

What's the other side look like?

Hand made gaming token or poker chip. Maybe made from a flattened pistol ball. I have a couple CW era ones I've found here in Virginia. One made from a 58 cal and the other from a 69 cal bullet.

Men used whatever they on hand had to entertain themselves. In camp, boredom was a big enemy.

Thank you for taking the time to look at my post and responding! I am sorry about not providing good pictures to begin with! I do have both front and back in my post, but when I was just looking at my own photos I couldn't tell the difference! So here are a few more, face of nickle side A back of nickle side B. Thanks again! P1040005.JPGP1040006.JPGP1040008.JPGP1040009.JPG

Thank you for your comment, I don't see anything that looks like iron, it all looks pretty much the same. I am going to run it under my detector again and see what number it came up as, but I know iron wasn't one of them. Thanks again!

Your answer is definitely more exciting than the rest of them! It also makes more sense to me just because it seems too symmetrical to just be a piece of lead. The markings also seem to be placed on purpose, I also thought of the chewed lead idea too, but the marks don't look like teeth marks to me. Thank you for taking the time to reply!

I agree with DC Matt on this...
This was a hunk of boredom lead...
This could remain a "mystery piece"...

This could even be Native American boredom as well... imo.

maybe a bale seal?

I will have to googlel that, I am not sure I know what that is! Thank you for taking time to reply, and I will do some research!

Looks like chewed on lead

I also need to do some research on what a lead seal is! I love metal detecting for many reasons, but learning things about our past is awesome!

I have to add... this is Not a bale seal... imo
I appreciate your input, but it would help me more if you could say why or why not! I have been reading about them and trying to figure things out, any info you have could help me learn more!

Well... Like I stated with the abbreviation "imo" = in my opinion...
My opinion is based upon just that... my opinion. :)

Sometimes I have a "sense" ... call it a sixth sense if you like... but none the less... its a sense.

But... I will also add...
Theory must never contradict fact...

From what I have seen of bale seals... which is a huge amount... mostly obviously in pictures... I have noted that the "stamps / marks" on the seals themselves are a "finished" purpose work of art / mark...

Where as your piece appears to have been "tooled" mark by mark... by hand.
THUS...
Making your mystery piece less likely IMO of being a "bale / bag seal". :)

These finds are fairly common on furtrade sites. Why did Native Americans, frontiersman, soldiers, etc. chew on lead? Boredom, to make gaming pieces, mouth feel, who knows... Cool find!

Thank You for the additional information, it was very helpful. Even the IMO, I had no idea what that meant! LOL

Thank You every one, I will consider this solved or at least as solved as it will be! I learned a lot of new things from this find, with your help! Thanks again!

I submit that the old "bite the bullet" saying was just that, a saying. Take a Minie ball or a round ball and put it in your mouth and try to chew it. Good luck not breaking a tooth.
