Those buttons are from the Spanish American War period. They came into existance in, I believe, 1876 and were used until around 1902 or 3, somewhere in there. Then they went to the great seal button which is still used today. I am at the office so I don't have my button book with me but the dates are real close.

The backmark does seem to match 1875-1893 era according to Tice's book.

Thanks Guys for the quick and informative answers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have a whole pile of the newer flat style eagle buttons from this location, but only a few of the rounded kind. Hopefully, some more will come out of the ground.

And you can keep more of the gilding on them by using Aluminum Jelly to clean them up. Check out my post on buttons in the "Cleaning and Preservation" section.
