Found this and I'm pretty sure it is a hat plate. It is very similar to the Milita Hat Plate on page 168 of Mike O'Donnell's "American Military Headgear Insignia" It is silver plated brass with a lead filled back. Also still has the attachment wires as seen in the pike. Came from an area that has produced relics from 1740s Reales to Civil War.. with a few odd later hunting items.. pocket knife, shells etc.. The house site itself burned either during the Civil War or soon after and was not rebuilt. I can't tell what the letters are.. the first appears to be an "H" then maybe an "F" and "L" ??? but I'm guessing..

Any help??

Thanks,
MB

P.S. added a picture of this hat plate with the one in the book.

nice one, can't tell what letters myself, but I'm sure somebody will be able to :icon_thumleft:

Very interesting piece, look forward to reading more about it! :notworthy:

Hard to tell but it looks like "HSS" I have no idea what that would stand for though. Good luck getting it I'ded (it looks a lot like the one in your book).

Have you posted this in the "what is it" section yet?

Last weekend a friend of mine whose house is surrounded by CW encampments found a similar item in a field near his house . His has similar script lettering but is encircled and there is lettering in the circle...I will try to get a pic of it and try to decipher what the lettering says. He also found the skin of a US buckle or rosette. I'll get a pic of that too.

I agree with savant that it does look like HSS to me also. Although, that script can be VERY tricky :laughing9: That's a terrific find MB and cannot wait til you I.D. what unit it is. I agree with you that it is a brass hat plate/insignia.....just an AWESOME piece! :headbang:

Looks like SSIC when flipped. Kinda looks like it might have something to do with a band, seen similar on the front of those music sheet holder things they clip to flutes etc.
