Mike McGuire

I just got off the phone with a friend of mikes that found the cannon,he said the cannon is his and to not to sell it,he wants me to bring it to my place to store for him.It was found in the keys near a 1733 wreck called "the fly"it was a 1800's era merchant schooner that crossed wreck paths with a 1733 wreck.

Re: Mike McGuire - Fly cannon

The Fly wasn't merchant vessel, the Fly was in fact a British Royal Navy warship. Here is the excerpt from my book...

1805. British sloop-of-war H.M.S. Fly, 18-guns, Commander Powell Bastard Pellew, wrecked in the Gulf of Florida on Carysfort Reef on March 2; all one hundred twenty-one officers and crew were saved. The loss was attributed to an error on the charts. The wreck of the Fly is actually lies on Little Conch Reef, quite near the wreck of the El Infante, 1733. A few sources, including A Guide to Sunken Ships in American Waters, state that the Fly carried $100,000 in specie at the time of her loss, but I have been unable to find any contemporary documents to substantiate this claim. (Note: Numerous books give May as the month in which the Fly was lost; however Commander Pellew’s court martial already took place on April 17, 1805; thus the month of May is incorrect and is in actuality when the news of the vessel’s loss reached England.)

A more detailed explanation...

In 1997, I obtained a permit from NOAA and the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary to conduct archaeological research on the El Infante, a Spanish galleon that wrecked on Little Conch Reef in 1733. Also located on this reef are the remains of the British sloop-of-war H.M.S. Fly. I conducted a great deal of archival research on both ships for my report. Numerous seemingly reliable sources including Shipwrecks of the Americas by Robert Marx and Ships of the Royal Navy by J.J. Colledge stated that the Fly wrecked in May 1805. However, subsequent research revealed that the Fly’s commander, Captain Pellew’s court martial took place on April 17, 1805. Warning bells immediately went off in my head…How could the captain of a vessel be court-martialed for loosing his ship in April, if the ship wasn’t lost until May? Indeed further research revealed that the actual wreck of the Fly had occurred on March 2, 1805, the captain was court-martialed in April (Commander Pellew was acquitted of any wrong doing and the loss was attributed to an error on the navigational charts), and news of the warship’s loss reached England in May.

Anyway, the Fly is still a real nice site to dive.

Okay, so the "1733 cannon" is not from the 1733 fleet, and it's not even the advertized owner to sell, and the "1733 anchor" doesn't look like a big spanish anchor to me... I would love to have an ancor from this fleet in my front yard, but what proof do you have that this is from that fleet? And it still has concretion on it?!? Were these things ever put into preservation? Jesus Christ,

Nice gun collection though! If I only had the money. Screw the fake 'treasure', I'd buy the guns.

What a shame to let these artifacts deteriate as they have done. I don't know Mike but he's trying to sell his friends stuff?
Good friend he is. What about the pottery in the photo with the cannon, and are they from a wreck? I would be interested. But I want the honest truth.

Actually it was mikes ex wife that wanted me to sell the cannon, her not knowing it belonged to someone else. Now she knows. The pottery is not from a wreck, its from a store,i think pottery barn.

I just sold mikes 24 foot ex navy patrol boat today. The boat transporter just drove away with it to a happy person in boston mass.

Glad the boat sold, John. So how is Mike and his fam these days?

Mike got 10 years in prison.Hes already done 1 1/2 years. He did a plea deal from the advice of his crooked lawyer. Its a complicated case. The black guy he shot at was a CI for the local police and the state attorney. The same judge that mike had, signed the CI agreement for the guy he shot at.Some conflict of interest here. His lawyer recommended that mike take the plea deal instead of a jury trial then looking to get life if he lost.Plus the state attorney wanted to protect their CI,But apparently the CI told the cops in the police report that he was a CI.This is public info.I guess the lawyer didn't see this.Or saw it and just wanted to take 50k from mike.Anyway.Mike has a very good jailhouse lawyer that he pays him with donuts and his dad has hired a high powered lawyer also.He has a good job in the kitchen warehouse.I think hes working on getting his plea reversed and the cops/state attorneys involved busted for their miss use of a CI.There are strict federal and state guidelines for the use of CI's that the cops and state attorneys have to abide by.The CI was allowed to sell drugs,do home invasions, drive on a suspended license while on house arrest, run prostitution and a bunch of more stuff that's illegal. If anyone wants his mailing address email me,im sure he would like to hear from any of you.Books can be sent to him also.Just no porn.

The only way to send magazines is to get a subscription for mike. His dad said he would pay for half of whatever the cost is.

To send books, they have to be mailed from the publisher.

Photos can be sent direct to mike in your letter to him.

John,

I never met Mike in person but I am sure he needs friends right now. Send me his address and I will write him and send him some treasure hunting magazines…..

All the best,

Chagy….

I got a new update on Mike from his dad.Mike got granted a appeal court date.he has 3 lawyers working on his case.It seems as though the lawyer he had had some evidence that could have got him out of the trouble he was in and only told the judge and prosecutor about it.They all knew about it and did nothing. Some heads are gonna roll....

Sounds like he might be treasure hunting again funded by the State...

err umm funded by tax dollars.

Could then FL tax payers counter sue the individuals... DA, judge...?

Either way hope it works out for Mike.

It sounds like he was not sentenced under 10/20/Life, which is a good thing.
If he had been, given that he shot someone, that 10 years would've been 25/Life, served day for day with no gain time.

If he has 1 1/2 years in the bag plus gain time, he's probably looking at 5 or 6 more.

Three things every adventuresome should do, at least once.

A little time.

Mike did some kind of a plea deal. But was also denied a jury trial. The court didnt want to expose the CI that mike shot at.But apparently the CI told the cops in the police report that he was a CI.So now its public info.Whats interesting is this CI is also a convicted felon and was listed on seminole counties website.Right before mike had his court date the CI was removed off the web site. And he is not living in seminole county anymore.Hes in volusia county still leading a life of crime and working for the feds as a CI.There are certain federal guidelines that CI's and police and the feds have to go by.I read the 30 page guideline and they let this CI break every rule listed. The cops and feds in this case think they are above the law, they can do whatever they want till some guy like mike gets in trouble then they all get exposed, lose their jobs or worse, end up in prison and have a cell mate by the name bubba.
