I'm a new digger and I think I'm addicted! The hunting lease I'm on in Central Texas has several very large midden mounds .I asked land owner if I could dig around and he said sure I've been there 3 days in a row and going back today. Can anyone tell me what type of artifacts these are and how old they might be?

Some super finds you have there for two days! You have scrapers, blades, projectile points and performs from what I see. I'm sure someone from Texas can help you with I.D. on them. I think the one in the frame second from left is the oldest one in there. If I'm correct that looks like a Scottsbluff type point. But again.. I'm not from out your way. BIG WELCOME ABOARD and... your addicted now for sure.. the whole world will start to look like a site now..ha. If You search Texas Projectile point ID You should be able To find several Sites that can help you.

I would call the one you singled out a Bell type.. 5,000-7,000 years old. Just my guess.

Are you sure that applies to private property in your state?

Thanks for the info. I guess I need a book so I can match them up.

Yes it's legal in Texas. I checked

I knew you were on private property With permission to do exactly what you're doing... I was replying To the guy from West Virginia. I'm also very jealous great job!

Texas has some of the best laws for people with our hobby. Actually they dont really care what you do in Texas. I am moving to Texas just as soon as I hit the big Jackpot.

And you have several of those mounds to dig!? It reeks of jealousy in here....

You are doing right in keeping the brokes and anything that looks like it might be worked. As you learn what you are finding you will go back and discover items in your broke pile that are pretty neat. You might want to buy a book on Texas projectile points so that what you are digging will start telling the story of what and why they are there. The research makes you a better hunter/collector and just adds to the excitement.
I am also very picky about whom I take with me. If you are on a hunting lease am sure there are other members with similar interest. Just sayn.. I know Texas has a lot of pay to dig sites.
Good luck and be sure to take us along for the ride by posting.

Well the good news is the guys on the lease are not interested in digging. To much work I guess butt the bad news is we've had artifact poachers and they went to town. Since then we put up a camera and took their tools, hoping that will scare them away . Pretty serious trouble if they got caught, and I'm sure they know that. Thanks for the advise.

Good finds rjjdaman.

For a lot of good info on "Burned rock middens" go to "Texas Beyond History" then click on Camp Bowie dot. Or just pull up "burned rock middens."

Appears you got real lucky pulling all those points from one.

Very Nice.
