Hey there fellow TNeters, just a question for you. I recently put up a want about buying a metal detector and someone offered me a Micronta 63-3002. Not sure exactly what this is, that's why I need your help. I've never heard of this, and the person is asking a reasonable price. Can anyone help out? Thank you very much!

What do you call reasonable? In my opinion this detector would be lucky to find a quarter under a single sheet of newspaper. Well, it's not that bad, but close. I'd say forget all the funny name detectors and only get one of the major brands like Garrett, Tesoro, Minelab or Whites.

Visit the manufactures websites to learn about the detectors. Then call Tony at http://tcmetaldetectors.com Tony visits this forum and has helped many newcomers to the hobby.

Sandman's right. It's a toy. You might find a manhole cover under a leaf :-*

You forgot one...Troy Shadow's

When in doubt, follow the Sandman's advice.

Outraged, sorry.

Troy Shadow's are manufactured by Tesoro for Troy.

If memory serves me correct, Micronta is sold exclusively through Radio Shack. Avoid it like the plague. Everything I have bought that is Micronta has been first class foreign made junk. Follow Sandman's advice and buy from one of better known detector manufacturer's. Hope it helps.

Sandman....Only the first Troy machine (a Tesoro with Troys wider scan coil) was made by Tesoro.
The X3 and X5 were made by Fisher and benefited from a much better build standard.

I actually had a Micronta from radio shack when I was a kid and you know what.......I never found a coin with it. Years later I went back with my XLT, lots of coins were there. The Micronta is just not sensitive enough to pick them up at any depth. It seemed to only be good for finding the large chunks of scrap aluminum that inhabit my property. I remember this one time at a beach with it.
I found one dime, because it was on the surface and I eyeballed it lol. Please don't waste your time or your money with it. HH,
Donny

I have found coins with a micronta. It was one that you could ground balance and set knobs by hand. Did'nt gfo more than about two-three inches. But it did work. I loved it when i was a kid.

Buy a name brand detector.

Hell, you pay shipping, And I can find it in the attic, you can have it.

you guys are real hard on the micronta...

yes, its not the greatest but if you're on a budget its not that bad a deal. i got started with a micronta and learned alot using it. technique is technique and some MD'ing skills are learned by being out there digging junk up. things such as pin pointing, figuring out you found a pipe, and determining if you're looking at a coin sized object or a squashed beer can can only be learned with detector in hand, whatever it may be.

if you only have the budget for the micronta and it not one of the real low end models it may be worthwhile. i found lots of coins in the totlots with mine. stick to the totlots that have sand or wood chips on the ground so you can just kick some of the sand out of the way and rescan the spot without having to bend over a whole lot. once you get the hang of it you can unearth lots of pocket change/foil/tabs just by using your boots. it offsets the fact that the micronta will probably detect all these things just the same and you'll be digging quite a bit.

its not a great detector, but you can still have some fun with it.

Yeah I was being a little harsh on it. It was my first detector and I was a kid so I was not as good at detecting then. It did teach me the basics of detecting and I did find neat stuff, just not coins, but it was enough to hold my interest until I had the money to buy better. If I used it today I would find more but all I seem to remember was all the junk. HH,

Yeah I was being a little harsh on it.

It is a starter detector for most and we remember all the junk too. If you can afford a better detector, get it as the time you spend waving a toy around is time you never get back.

Thanks for the Advie everyone! I ended up Buying an Ace...and so far love it! Thanks for your input and advice about it, and Kas, Thanks for the offer!! :D Thank you very much everyone!!

Kiko,

I don't own an ACE, but from what I have heard it is a great little machine. A lot of folks here have an ACE as a primary or back up detector. Let us know what you think and what you are finding with it. Garrett is a great company that makes great products. Hope it helps.
