On July 29,1920, six men held up the Farmer's state bank at Grassy Lake. They fled to a house on Mack island where they made their stand. When they police surrounded the house there was a shootout leaving three of the robbers dead and two wounded. One escaped but was later captured. The take from the holdup was $69K, of which all was recovered except $1300 in gold coins.The three that survived spent 30 years in prison, where two died. Only one man lived to get out of prison. He went west and never returned to Michigan after his release.
