Hi Hunters, I'd like to know your opinions on this rock we found in the crop Field, here in NC, It's as big as a basketball, round with one flat spot, weighs 120-130Ibs. The metal detector gave a reading. All input appreciated, Thankyou.

Molly. :)

Molly: Looks like a meteorite to me. Good Job...

Is it magnetic? I'm willing to bet it isn't one just based on the shape and look of the texture on it. However to be on the safe side, file a window into it and if you see metallic specks then there's a chance it might be a meteorite.

That looks like a spirit rock!

I honestly can't tell from where I am and just by looking at the photographs...

The thing that makes me suspect it might be a meteorite is the shape. If it were iron based, you could expect an irregular shape but with stoney meteorites, the surface gets worn away much easier during atmospheric entry and that can result in a dense stone that can be some what smooth around the sides. To qualify as a meteorite, you'll want to look for a fusion crust which should be visible on at least one side of the stone. It will show a smooth area where the rock was burned and possibly even melted slightly. Take a closer look at that flat spot. Is there any indication of ablation from reentry?

Iron meteorites and Iron + Stone meteorites are fairly easy to identify. Stone meteorites are a little trickier. Since erosion can produce the shape in the original poster's rock, I'd show a little skepticism until more hints come to light. If it is stained by iron ore, it could trigger a mild reaction with a detector. If it has a strong signal, it could indeed be from outer space!

MOLLY THAT A BEAUTIFUL KILLER FIND. I'm sorry I haven't replied to this Thread but I had so many ppl tell me it was just a rock. I just assumed it wasn't anything worth thinking about, but after the PM I recieved today I am going to get a peice off it & get it tested.

You got access to a 4-wheeler and a small trailor with ramps thats low to the ground?
Having a winche with a strap on it would be good.

If I brought some pop corn.... could I watch? ;D

Molly I hope my suggestions to reveal its inner core work.
Most museums can have it tested and if it is real, pay you handsomely for it.
Good luck.
I`ll send you a PM with a pic of mine.

Not true.... I have all the confidence that if 3 women put their heads together, they can move a rock. ::)

Before you all jump on me.... I'm just kidding..... raised 3 daughters to be independent.

Lmao, you guys/gals are funny. I WILL move this rock somehow, even if I have to roll it back home. Its not that far away.
I have tried lots of ways to break/cut a peice off, its just not happening, so I intend on getting it home & getting the grinder on it.. I'm feeling like Tim Allen at mo, LOL so its not a problem.
I'll keep ya'll posted.
