May 1, 2012: A friend and I gear up for searching with metal detectors in Henningsen Park, Lotus, California to search for meteorite fragments from the recent fireball that rained down carbonaceous chondrites on this town in Northern California, near Coloma. The town of Lotus, CA is experiencing a tourist invasion of sorts as amateur searchers seek out the prized fragments which rumor has it go for $1,000 an ounce or more; more than gold! One waitress exclaimed "It's better than the gold rush!" It turns out carbonaceous chondrites are best found with your eyes alone; many have little iron content.
