Hi Folks!
New member here. My name is Mike Gilmer and I am an avid meteorite collector and dealer. I am also breaking into the world of fossil and relic hunting. In a few weeks, my wife and I are moving to Central Florida, and I'll be purchasing my first metal detector. We have a converted shortbus-RV and we will be travelling around the country looking for meteorites, fossils, relics, and anything else we can dig up.
I figured this is *the* place to get educated on prospecting, so I finally came over here and registered. Hopefully, in the coming weeks and months, I will have some finds to share here.
Meteorites are my main passion. Currently I own a few hundred that comprise 71 total localities, including 24 witnessed falls and 12 hammer falls. I specialize in collecting recent falls, historic falls, and exotic types (planetaries, etc). I have attached a photo of my meteorite display. The smaller specimens are kept in 3x4" Riker boxes with metal display labels. Larger specimens are kept on stands inside clear acrylic cubes. I have many more meteorites not shown in this display - these are just the ones I deem as worthy for display. Some are too small or too rare/valuable to keep out in the open, so I keep them stowed away in my specimen cabinet. My wife and I are also rockhounds and our collection is too big to catalogue - needless to say, I have rocks everywhere, including inside my head.
While I don't consider myself an "expert" on meteorites, I am a member of the Meteoritical Society and I have accumulated a volume of knowledge that I am willing to share. If anyone has a question about space rocks, feel free to fire away and I'll do my best.
Regards,
MikeG
