Howdy all! I need some help identifying and dating this metal printing plate. I found it out in the woods today. Crazy place to find such a treasure! Anyway, it has the words Ad. 595 FALL FASHION BOOK PICTORIAL REVIEW PATTERNS Dress 1857 45 cents. It has some other words as well and there is an image of a very stylish woman. The plate is approximately 2x3”. Any help is appreciated. Thanks and be well. Poco.

This ad was in this 1923 newspaper, (see the upper left): https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/53122763/

And I can find the text from it in other newspapers around the country in the fall of 1923, but without a good clear picture I can use... View attachment 1824788 View attachment 1824807
Wow! That’s great work. I thought it looked like a 1920’s style. That’s really cool info to know and a bonus to know now to use newspapers.com. I have used them for ancestry but never gave it a thought for this. Oh well. Live to learn and learn to live! Sorry about the picture quality. I really need to do better with that. Again, really great and many thanks!! Poco.

Welcome to Tnet from Toronto Pocopear! :hello:.
This is a very interesting find, I just had to clean it up to get a better look at it.
Looks like it's made of lead so it may very well date to 1857.

My suggestion would be to have it professionally cleaned/restored, then consider having a print made from it and frame the plate and the print together.
I'd head back there and look for more, as this could be one of many that may have been dis-guarded there.

Dave

That’s a fab idea. I am so going to do that! I love it! And yes, sorry about the pic quality. I don’t know how soon I’ll be able to get it done but will definitely post a photo (with better quality). As you may have seen, NHBENZ found some awesome info on this and the year the Advertisement ran was 1923. I think the reference to 1857 was the pattern number. This has truly been a super experience both in the finding and in the help and welcome from everyone. I will be going back to the site, hopefully to find more. But it’s cool either way. If they are out there I would love to preserve them as well. Poco.

Would be very cool to find a local 1920's Minnesota area newspaper that ran this exact ad.
That way, it might even be the actual plate that did the printing!

(I assume the item was found in Minnesota, although PocoPear did not say.)
Hey! Yes it was found in Minnesota and I’m already on it. Looking for that paper now. Also, will be asking around about who owned the property back then to see if there is an even closer connection. To be continued...Poco
