metal detectors for kids

My 8 yr old great-grandson is quite interested in treasure hunting and my son is thinking of buying him a metal detector for his birthday. Can anyone tell me what kind would be the best to buy. Probably in the $100 - $200 range. One that's not too complicated for him to learn to use.

Discovery 3300 from radio shack.
My 8 year old son has fun with his and it gives him an ID to look at and is very light.

Call Radio Shack and ask for this catalog number 63-3018 and you will get it at around 100.00 ! Its a pretty detector !

a lot of people have been saying good stuff about the 3300. look at the garrett ace 250 as well.

I have an Ace 250, it's a great machine. It hangs with detectors at twice the price. I got my daughter a Discovery 2200 from Radio Shack for her birthday. It's lighter than my 250, and I am so impressed with it. If you can find one, it's only $49.95.

Also you might want to consider the Tesoro Compadre. It is light weight, no bells or whistles, adjustable pole and is backed by the famous Tesoro warranty. Just a thought.

We got our son a Garrett Ace 150.....very lightweight (I use it all the time ...mine is TOO HEAVY for me ). If I remember correctly, it was abt $149 for the Ace 150.
