The subject line pretty much sums it up. This is the most unusual find I think I have ever detected!! ;D
Well to start at the beginning, here is a pic of whats left of a farm house that was demo'ed a few weeks ago. I noticed it on the way home from work one day and stopped to check it out for a possible detecting site. I talked to the dozer operators and secured permission to hunt it anytime I liked as long as they were not running any equipment.

That was about two weeks ago and I was able to get back down there today since the rain has gone. I did'nt have the camera to get any more pics at the site but it was pretty much the same as the above pic. I hunted the yard area since it was still grassy and not muddy and started finding a few wheats and clad. I had dug my first silver (1950 quarter) and decided to move to what used to be the back yard.
On the way back there I was moving thru some tall grass (you can actually see the area in the bottom right where the yellow looking grass is), when my detector squawked. I looked down and saw this:

I realized it was an old geiger counter and laughed as I remembered all the people that I have ran into while detecting and they called my machine a geiger counter! ::)
Anyway I thought it was a pretty neat find and thought I would share it with you guys. Here are a few more pics of it and the totals for this site:

Here are the totals:
Quarter, 1950, Rosies, 1949,1961, Nickels, 1946,1958D, Wheats, 34,42,45,51D,53D,56,56. A religious pendant, an old lipstick case, and a Ford spindle cover for a Model A. I also dug about a dollar in clad that was not pictured and a bunch of misc junk. :(

What a great find! Someone just the other day referred to my MD as a Geiger Counter. Have you tried the Geiger Counter to see if it will work?

I know what ya mean about the geiger counter wisecracks. Very cool find.

You definitely have one of the most unique finds posted here that I have seen.....besides the Goat Head! Glad you found some silver too! Way to go!!

Now you can go looking for uranium, too. LOL Nice finds at that demolition. Maybe wait another week or so and see if any more soil has been moved around, then try again. Don't want to miss the gold that's there, do you? ;D

Congrats on all the silver and the wheats...the geiger counter is a bonus prize!

Thanks for all the comments.

sfinder no I haven't tried to put batteries in it yet. It looks to take several D cells so I may try to put some in and see what it does! :o

DANGLANGLEY Thanks for the link, there is alot of neat info there!

TreasureTales I will be going back there after they move some more dirt for sure!!

Hey the counter is a very cool find need to see if you can get it up and runing. It will be worth some cash if you decide you dont want to keep it yourself. I bought one a year or so back and it is fun to play with if nothing else. Mine is a lot later unit and it and the test samples together cost about $250.00 the samples were a $100.00 of that but im sure if your unit works it would do the same job. Any way kinda neat to see what all you can find around that will show up as radioactive. Take care all

Now that's something different.Neat find.Good luck on your return trip.

:o What a surprise find! :o Lovin' it!

I am so glad you posted a pix of the area you are hunting, I really like seeing the places people describe & where they find the items!

Love the religious pendant!

Sounds like it was a good hunt & should be interesting what is found on the next time round! Can't wait! ;D

Bogart :D

Would be interesting to see if any of the radioactive source is still there under the side plate - of course there is the possibility that the gas in the geiger tube has gone away - but they are usually pretty good at staying sealed

What a cool story to tell.................Display that baby..

Congrats on the silver, the geiger counter is one nice find..........and yesterday someone at the park referred to my metal detector as a geiger counter!
