Ace 250, X-terra 70, sandshark pi, vibraprobe 560 and 580
I was talking about doing some metal dectecting at the park with my wife, I told her that i haven't done any parks yet because I didn't want to look like a geek. Then my 9 year old said not to worry about it because I don't need a metal detector to look like a geek you are one. Why didn't I get a kitten 9 years ago instead of a kid. Oh well.....Off to the park!

Just do like me. Before going detecting i make sure i've got fresh white tape an my glasses. My pocket protector is full of #2 sharpened pencils, and i always wear my plaid shirt thats too small. And along with my black sandels and white socks. I don't think any body can tell if i'm a Geek. HH

I've found that anyone worth knowing in this world will walk right up and express interest in what you're doing when at a park, maybe even throw in a few comments about how they'd like a detector too. The one's that just stare at you, I like to pretend that they lost a gold bracelet in the park and are just pi$$ed that you're going to find it. ;D

I loved the title of the post and had to respond. The first day I brought home my detector, my kids started with all the geek jokes......but quit when they started seeing the coins piling up in the jar!

Now, my brothers ? They still call me Geek, havent figured out how to impress them yet :(

I really don't care what people think when I'm MDing, cause I'm usually finding good stuff.
But the absolute best look is the glare in the eyes of the dreaded Groundskeeper!!!! when he first spots you digging in the lawn he takes care of LOL. Thats when you need to know your rights and stand up for yourself. Had more than one groundskeeper try to run me off.

Geeks, who are the geeks that is the question? I have detected hundreds of parks beaches etc over the years and would have had probably only half a dozen people mainly kids who come up and make a funny twisted comment or go make stupid beep beep sounds trying to be smart. The way I see it these people are the geeks not the guy out there swinging the detector enjoying a great healthy outdoor hobby.

Monday mornings are the very best days for hunting parks. All the kiddies are in school, and the losers are still in bed recovering from the weekend, and everyone respectable goes to work. Ummmmm wait... ??? that just leaves me and the goundskeepers in the park. So what category does that put me in if I'm not at work? ??? But really, any weekday morning is good to go to the parks.

I made a post a while back about the different types of peiople that are apt to be out and around when I am metal detecting.? IE:? dimpster divers, meal can collectors, homeless people, certifiable morons (my classification?)and the ever present grounds keepers.? The grounds keepers in my city don't try to run you off, but if they're mowing they try to get as close to you as they can without actually running over you.? Once in a while I grab my foot and roll on the ground like I am hit just to watch them either hurry to the other side of the park or stop and stare.? Then I jump up and stroll off whistling a tune like I do it all the time. When I look back there is a look of utter shock on their faces!? Monty

I wear an orange vest like the traffic contol guys on a road construction site , and my hard hat. Everyone
that looks at me thinks I must work for the city. Never had a problem.

That is genious!! :D

Cape,

There's one flaw with your plan that most people will see right through. If you were a true city worker you would have a team of at least 7 others in vests and hard hats standing around watching you swing your detector. At least that's how it seems to work in my city.
