Months ago I found the flattened object on the right in deep woods using my Nox 800. Had no idea what it was but soon after posting it here in Today's Finds a fellow TN member correctly identified it as an 1830's Shako Plume Holder. I've since researched early American Militaria and Uniforms and have grown to really appreciate the find. I always wonder about those who originally owned such objects. One good possibility for the artifact I found is that it could have been worn by soldier guarding the nearby Customs House, one of the first in the country stationed at one of the largest Whaling Ports on the New England shore.
I have found only two of these Shako Plume Holders for sale on the web and just received this rare museum-quality non-dug piece on the left which I purchased for my collections. I have no idea what the rest of my piece looked like, but this intact beauty was worn by an Artillery Officer. I like how it compliments my find and no longer have to explain to others what this artifact may have looked like.
