Found this along time ago, think at a High School. Just got my 1st puter and digi camera a year or so ago, found you folks a week or so ago, put's new meaning for me to 'treasure is where you find it, lol' So, hoping someone knows for sure what this is. The Merc is a '45, and recessed into the non magnetic but steel colored object, my apologies for poor photography. Thanks!

I have to apologize for me comments in previous posts. I had thought that the first two photos described a sort of plastic looking item and the third photo described a dime set on a flange. So I though you had two finds instead of one. Guess I didn't read the first message correctly.

No apologies needed. The first pics were bad, my bad, lol. I was sooooo sure one of y'all had found one of these, I figured the lousy pics would be enough to identify it. I was wrong.

Guys like me learn from guys like you, thanks!

I didn't see the hole before.

I'll go back to my first guess - necklace pendant or braclet charm.

Do a search for mercury dime jewelry. The Merc dime is a very popular coin in jewelry making.

Dan, that is an interesting piece to say the least.

Last year, I recall a fellow MD'er that once dug up a rusty old bottle cap (bear with me on this)
and there was a Washington quarter "wedged" inside the cap. The reasoning was that
whoever opened the bottle took the discarded cap and placed it in their pocket. . . along
with their change. . . and when the cap was later discarded, so was the lodged quarter.

This may explain HOW your Merc ended up where it did.

The mystery object itself, may have had a "ring" (missing) that was attached through the
hole at the top (WAG) and the bottom (where the Merc is now), was screwed on to something
larger. That's all I can think of now :P

Happy Holidays!

I'd go with button too. There are buttons that use a cotter pin type dealio to hold them
But, your pin looks dead on for a hair pin, so maybe it replaced the cotter pin
I used to see cotter pin type buttons all the time (not like yours)
Go figure, I can't find a trace on Google of one now thou

Sorry the pic is small

Guys/gals, my apologies again. That is a modern store bought bobby pin and has nothing to do w/ the object I found. I just used it to hold the thing while I took pics of it. The pocket the Merc sits in is too precise size wise to be an accident. The jewelry option doesn't wash as the object itself won't shine up. The surface I sanded does not appear to be pot metal, looks like steel, but is non magnetic. Notice also, the dime fits very flush w/ face of holder, which makes me doubt the wax thingy idea.

I really appreciate all the ideas and am not making light of any of them, I have the advantage here. lol, I can hold it in my hand and have been thinking about it for years. Sometimes it's hard to be accurate w/ a keyboard.

The quarter in the bottle cap must have been a puzzler signal wise. I dug a sliver quarter against a buffalo nickel once and had not dug it for weeks due to the hinky signal.

Id say it looks like a primative acorn nut with with an inside diameter big enough to accommodate that sweet dime.
nice find!!

it could also be accidental that the dime is stuck in there. back in the early 70s my step dad being the dirty dog that he was
used to put his wedding band in his pocket when he was out bar hopping. one time, the following day
when he pulled the ring back out to put it on his finger, there was two pennys stuck in the ring
that must have fell in while the ring was still warm. when the ring cooled and contracted that
tiny amount, they were stuck solid.

If found at a high school, my guess some kid got bored and made it in shop class. One of a kind

Teacher's Blue Tack is what I use to hold my finds, it is similar in consistency between clay and Silly Putty. It will not harm your finds!.........NGE

Little children are known for putting things in places where they don't belong.
I've watched my little grandsons do it many times.
I started dusting and cleaning my computer one day and found several items
inside of the external hard drive compartment, I knew right away how they got there.
Had to watch them around electrical outlets.
Happy Hunting,
Clayton

Oh so true Clayton! This doorstop had a couple of pennies behind the merc and all the other doorstops in this empty 4 bedroom house that i was painting had coins stashed in them
