Mel Fshers Favorite Coin?

Hi Tnmountains, Thanks for the coin pics. What is the coin I can just see an edge of in the top pic? The visible part of the legend looks well detailed. Is that the one showing the cross in the bottom view? That happens a lot of times. One side will look great and the other will be nearly eaten away by corrosion. Sam is right about the grade three being of good weight. Although assayers were relatively honest at the time corrosion has taken its toll on many an Atocha coin. Great story about the cousin and letter - something to keep in the family for passing down.

What's your personal best CW find? Maybe you could invite me out to one of your secret hunting areas some time. I'm near Kennesaw mountain, but haven't found much except for cannon ball frags.

Oh, yeah, full weight for an 8 reale should be about 27.5 grams.

I posted two coins side by side,,can you scroll sideways to see it? It was the better coin. I can only think that the envelope made them look goldish. I should have shot them against a dark background.
Hunted today at Whiteside,Tn. It was the largest rail road bridge constructed during the civl war. I had never been there. Did not find much but a lot of spikes and old square nails. It was an exploratory trip from old photographs.
Well I am not famous for my civil war stuff but ancient indian,,, I am pretty good. My best CW is probably the action of a musket from Shilo some Eagle I buttons, grape shot, and lots of bullets.I dig bullets out of my own yard as I am near Missionary ridge and dug 3 enfields the other day one with the wood plug still in.Here is a pic of where I hunted today. I am working on a spot in Resaca Ga before to long. You are welcome to go.

So do you guys ever find any coins like these ? We find silver coins but nothing like these. I guess they are out there but would guess you would have to find Desotos camp ground ! Lol

On Desoto's trail you would be much more likely to find the indian trade trinkets (glass beads, hawk bells, etc.) than cobs. Not much you could buy out in the wilderness, however there was a copper maravedi cob coin found in an archaeological excavation of Desoto's winter camp near Talahassee.

They found a sword from the expedition in Rome Georgia at the King site, but no cobs....

I have a trade axe from his route on the Tennessee River. Not telling its history though. Where you able to see the second coin?

Well, if you can find ancient indian stuff with a metal detector that's pretty good! :)

OK, I downloaded your coin pics to view them. If you make your pictures wide the forum cuts them off from view without the help of a horizontal scroll bar. The "vs III" you can see on the upper left of your best coin is part of the king's name "Philipvs III". Not a bad coin.

Good research on the bridge. That's what it takes. I have many references and maps relative to the CW. There are some maps in Scaife's book on Resaca that are shown in the context of modern day roads. I would like to meet up with you up there if you are serious.

I found the axe laying on the ground off a hill up near Hiwassee. It was during a primitive hunt, My neighbor hunted Resaca and found some great shot andcannon balls and some bullets embedded in wood chunks on the ground. He wants to take me to his spot while he is still able. I think it would be a fun trip and you are most welcome to go.

Tnmountains, thanks for the pic's on the coins, love your history, I wish I could join you and
Stan on your hunt, Desoto is my grandmothers family name, well good luck guys and please
post some photos.
Cheers, Sam
