Nothing inscribed on the flat surface? I seem to remember seeing an old family bible that had a similar brass plaque attached to the spine of the book with the family name etched in it.

No. The flat surface appears perfect for an inscription, but nothing there.

At the point where the "cleavage" comes together, it has the appearance that something could have been affixed at that point.
