MD'ers elbow?

Hi everyone.

I just finished my first "season" detecting and had a great time, met some folks online, and can't wait to get out next year. The only negative thing that I can think of is this nagging pain in my elbow. Maybe I'm just swinging the darn thing wrong. I haven't had the chance to go out with any "experienced" folks yet, but I have met some here that I hope to beable to meet in person next year. That is if this elbow quits hurting so much. I'm using a Tesoro Cibola and it is very light so, maybe it's technique? Is there such a thing as MDer Elbow? Any advice would help. I'm not going to let this slow me down, even if I have to pack an ice pack and a bottle of Advil when I go. I'm just oping that it is something in my mechanics.

I hope everyone had a safe and Merry Christmas and has an even safer New Year.

Thanks again.

Re: MD'ers elbow?

Back in the '70s my Dad got "Tennis Elbow" from detecting like a maniac...

He went to a lighter detector, adjusted the length, and rested it. Prolly used ice/heat and asprin too...

A change is technique might be in order... or, splint the elbow... ?? Good luck :)

Re: MD'ers elbow?

Yes and no. What you have is more commonly called Epicondylitis or Lateral Epi. Tennis Elbow.

Make sure your arm is as straight as possible and you are using your shoulder to swing the detector not your elbow and lower arm.

Do a web search on tennis elbow and you will find several easy to do exercises that will help you out with this as well. Another culprit is the digging tool you are using. Whether you realize it or not you are using a lot of your forearm muscles when digging especially with a Lesche or similar type digger, add to that the act of pushing a button a pinpointer (I use a Bullseye II) and you get repetetive strain injury.

Hurts like heck too. I also used Alleve or Ibuprofen and Ice to help. Do not apply ice for longer than 20 minutes at a time during each hour. Also never apply ice directly to the skin as it can burn the skin.

I am not a doctor but I do work in the health care field and with the help of several of the physical therapists I work with I was able to work through it.

One other item you might try is a brace.

This web page helped. I am NOT affiliated nor do I endorse this site or its company or claims, it simply had some good info on it for me. The mods may remove it if it violates any rules of the forum.

Re: MD'ers elbow?

Hi Hatman,I used to have the same problem.I started using a hip mount and havent had a problem since. If all else fails I been thinkin I could rig my detector up to onea them remote control cars ! :D

PS.Thanks for the info Mastereagle ! ;D

Re: MD'ers elbow?

i bought a heavy elastic elbow brace it works wonders 8)

Re: MD'ers elbow?

Like mastereagle22 said, keep the arm as straight as possible.

Re: MD'ers elbow?

Thanks everyone.

I do tend to swing with my lower arm. I always thought I looked like a robot by just using my shoulder and keeping my arm straight. But I guess robots don't feel pain. Maybe lengthening the downrod and keeping my arm straighter will help.

K. S. what is a hip mount? I guess I've never heard of that one. I do like the remote control car idea though. I would probably end up with tennis thumbs though.

I'll have to check out that site Master Eagle. At least I have the off season to rehabilitate. With all this warmer weather I can see the grass and I just want to go back out and keep hunting. Dec 26th and the snow is all gone. Who says there is no global warming.

Thanks again everyone.

One thing I forgot to mention. Even a little bit of exercise will make a huge difference! Stretching can be done anywhere and by spring you will be ready to go!!!

A hip mount is were you wear the control box on your hip, leaving just the coil and shaft to swing. The remote is gunna work ! ??? I also have plans for a remote control backhoe ! ;)

Re: MD'ers elbow?

This is embarrassing. Tennis Elbow is on the inside of the forearm and Golfer's Elbow is on the outside. At least that's what I remember. I got Golfer's Elbow last year and it hurt like heck. It even hurt to hold a fork and eat. Trouble was I got it playing a video game, "Pirates of the Caribbean." Needless to say I gave the game back to my son.

You need to slow down the sweeps and not use it like a grass whip. Keep the coil level to the ground too.

Sorry but no, lateral epi is on the outside of the elbow about 2cm below the elbow joint and Golfer's elbow affects the inside of the elbow. I know this because I suffered with it this summer and had to see a doctor and do some therapy to recover, and I have been in the healthcare field for the last 20 years. Anyway I don't want to be argumentative about it or anything, so please don't take this as me being a smart a$#. Simple solutions exist: keep arm straight and swing with the shoulder, do some easy stretching exercises and a little weight lifting exercise as demonstrated on the page linked above and you will be back in action in no time.

Re: MD'ers elbow?

mastereagle22,

The inside of my forearm was hurting for days after I went to the beach with my Explorer II and the X-12 I recently purchased. I wasn't using the swingy-thingy apparatus and I paid for it. Was that the golfers elbow you guys are mentioning? I bet I won't use that coil again without the extra support. It stills hurts and it has been about a week. Sucks not to be 20 anymore. Heck I would be happy to go back to 35! I was invincible then, amazing what 15 years will do to the body. Note: I am not complaining, just pointing out facts. I am in pretty good shape, just not as strong as I used to be. HH
