✅ SOLVED McClellan Saddle

Hi all, just got this at the thrift store. Any experts on here to help with the model? I think 1904 but maybe 1909? Also anyone know why the leathers across the front and back were cut on purpose? Was this like the military cutting them to show they were 'retired' or something similar?
My great grandfather was in WW1 Cavalry so this was a cool thrift store find for me

I would appreciate any help marking it unsolved through the tapatalk app. Our instructions on it have it for a desktop version and I only have a cell phone and use the app. Everything I post is default solved and I dont know how to change it
