There's an area in Braidwood, IL that used to be a coal strip mine until the 1960's that is apparently world-famous for its Pennsylvanian age fossils of soft bodied animals, most notably the elusive state fossil, the Tully Monster. It's only an hour and a half drive for me so I went to Mazonia, as well as areas around Braidwood Lake that are known for these concretions, but only found about 20 decent nodules. The area is so overgrown!
Here's a blog post about my trip and details about the area:

Has anybody had more luck in this area? I know I'm not in the wrong spot, as this is one of the more well-known spill piles, but does anyone know of any areas off the beaten path a bit more?
