I found this in my parents front yard, and I have a hunch that it's lipstick, but I'm not quite sure. Can someone help with this? Thanks!

The Cannonball was human error as was trying to disarm it and supposedly he had already removed the fuse. But this is the first I have heard of a shotgun shell or cartridge going off in someones hand, pocket or on the shelf. I keep shells in my pocket all the time and am not concerned and I also have old shells in a hot storage warehouse..

The old shotgun shells as well as cartridges were filled with black powder. I wonder if that was more unstable? Maybe someone can elaborate. Thanks for the story MoJoe.

Biemeck and Peter George, co-author of a book on Civil War ordnance, believe White was using either a drill or a grinder attached to a drill to remove grit from the cannonball, causing a shower of sparks.

he combination of sulfur, potassium nitrate and finely ground charcoal requires a high temperature — 572 degrees Fahrenheit — and friction to ignite.
