Probably just the effects of rusting away.
Though it does kind of reminds me of a soldering iron a tad.
Don't recall if they had steel ends.
Heated up-poking someone-would get their attention alright.

In my experience, it is just how the rusting process sometimes works on iron. It will more severely attack one section of the material more than others, and when it is a nail, or other similar shaped artifact, you get these pointed ends...especially on old forged material like yours.

Agree, spear point would tend to have been pounded flat to a blade at the point instead of being the same diameter as the shaft at the other end. Not to say it wouldn't serve the purpose. Things just rust weird and even almost absorb neighboring rocks and other objects into the rust to produce bizarre shapes.

I might add that these rusty points on iron rods can also be caused by the portion of rod being in contact with the ground, where perhaps it was driven into the earth as a fencing post, a property marker or similar. Where it is in contact with the ground is vulnerable to a heavier concentration of corrosion. I dont think yours is a electrical ground rod, but you can see the similar rusting point where this one was in contact with the earth. I keep this one on my work truck to show other electricians here in Florida that the rod needs to be driven in flush. Perhaps yours was an old property marker that met the same fate.

Doesn't appeat to be a spear point, blade should be flat. I think others are right that rust has shaped it.

Reminds me of an Anchor rod, and I changed out more than a few. I think being under tension shapes them into real “pointy” items.

Yep. They will oxidize away down to the single atom. Super sharp on that tip. Another reason to wear gloves. It is a forged item, and IMO, the shape it has now is not the shape it had at it's beginning.
