Metal Detecting
I searched a former home site yesterday that dates back to at least the 1850s. It was tough detecting due to the ferns, fallen trees, brush, and mosquitos, but I was determined. Near the end of my search, I found this nice 1821 Matron Head large cent in a small area between the foundation and the well hole. From what I have read, the year 1821 had the lowest known mintage for the Matron Head series of 1816 to 1835, with just 389,000 struck. The 1823 mintage is thought to be lower, but totals are unknown for that year. Other years typically have mint totals in the millions and was as high as 4.4 million in 1820. Besides the coin, I also found a few buttons, a small round ball, a nice brass thimble, and part of a spoon. Good luck out there and happy hunting.

Very Cool!!! I like the Eagle!! Congrats!!!

Great hunt lenmac65! Your LC is in terrific shape. Nice camera work too! I'm very impressed with the low mintage for the 1821. Bonus credit for digging all those finds in less than desirable conditions! God how I hate mosquitos..the Fall can't get here soon enough.

Good variety of old finds! Buttons look like late 1700s to mid 1800s. The cent is a real treasure!
Thanks! That’s my guess on the buttons too, with the largest being the oldest.

Thanks for all the comments. Yes … the mosquitoes are dreadful, and this site abuts a poorly drained area. The weather has been much nicer lately, but I too look forward to the fall. Good luck to you.

Nice work lenmac65
that gal is crisp bub
Thank you. The coin was on the sloping edge of the cellar hole, so maybe it benefited from better drainage. There is a small dent on the rim and some minor corrosion, but it is otherwise in pretty good shape considering its time underground. Good luck out there!

Thanks neighbor. The LC is in good shape except for the small dent and a bit of corrosion, and it actually looks better in person. The eagle is store bought 😁, and I might use it to prop up coins again, assuming I am lucky enough to find something else worth posting.
