Two halves of a horse bit = one complete bit .. It would have looked like this ..sorta .. but the mouth pieces are rotated so I couldn't make the curves exactly right.

Is this what you mean by side view? Also i found this 18?9 large cent two steps from the bit so thats why im curious to the age. Of course the field is 200 years old so i realize they may be generations apart.

It is definitely a Horse bit Two piece connected with a ring so it would flex and be more comfortable for the horse

Cool find, I found a very old complete one this past summer along with a bunch of ox shoes

This bit does look period to the very nice Largie. Look past the corrosion and it was in very nice shape when it went in.

Dating them is hard, but I would guess 19th century.

The best I can determine is the later part of the 19th century. Prior to that, most bits had rings instead of fixed slots to which the curb reins were attached.
