These were found together and about to fall out of an eroding creek bank. They were a few inches below the top of the bank and they were found just like someone up and left them there to come back to—just as the picture shows—except of course I had to pull them from the dirt. Other artifacts have also been found in this creek.

My knowledge of mortars and pestles is limited, but what is confusing me is that for the shape of the pestle I would think the mortar would be shaped differently. There is a shallow bowl in the mortar—see pic from side—but with my limited knowledge I would think the matching pestle wouldn’t be the shape this one is.

My conclusion is that either this is a legit match, or these are natural and a purely astonishing coincidence to be found together as they were. Central Va.

No, you have a very nice mortar and pestle. Nice find and good eye!

The stone match so must be put together by human and not nature. Could be for grinding colors from plants for painting???
What a great find. It makes me think of who & why left this next to a creek. Indians did bury their dead next to streams to help the spirit find it's way to happy hunting grounds.

If you can get some pics of the business end of the pestle that is the best way to tell. If its nicely flattened and smoother then the rest of the rock or has a dimple then yes.

Thanks for looking everyone! Appreciate the insight. I can get some pictures up in a week :hello:
