Matanzas Inlet

To all,

One, I did fill in my holes, I always do!!! it's the mail rule of Metal Detecting:
and The law enforcement ranger even came up to me and ask me if I found anything.
The main rule with Matanzas "right side" stay close to the water. I've
been Detecting that area for the past 20+ yrs. and I even told the ranger finder keeper's on
French, and Spanish, Dutch relics, coins I always find. So Guys, take a chill pill. ;D

i hunted the beach across from fort matanzas on the ocean side. the sand drove my MD'er nuts. there's signs about staying off the dunes and the place is laid out national park style with NPS type signs. i got a map of the actual park area right from the park service before i hunted. there's parts of it that are not listed as being part of the national park according to the map the park service provides on their website.

print the map, bring it with you in case you get an unfriendly ranger.

like i said though.. i didnt find squat and my coinstrike was going nuts. it seemed like theres was some kind of pipes or cables under the sand because i could follow multiple "lines" along the sand that triggered the md'er.

Re-Tek,

Do-Not always go by that map. beach and inlet side's are very good hunting.
but in that area: stay VERY close to the water!! Now, with the Troll monster gone at the
ticket booth. hunting will be peaceful again. I was there Mon. found a few rings and coins. even
something French, and Spanish!

good hunting

well shoot, if you cant go by their own map then how can then who's you gonna go by? i figure this is what would happen....

ranger rick - hey, you can do that here!
MD'er - well sir the map said this area was not part of the NPS
ranger rick - what map?
MD'er - your map, the map provided by the park service! here, let me show you.

at this point the guy will either leave you alone or still kick you out but i doubt they'll try to stick you with a fine or take your stuff if you're out of the park boundaries and can prove it.

given the circumstances... if i got kicked out and was in the right and can prove it in a map i would call the NPS and ask them whats up? i'm a tax payer and i'm following the law and i'm still getting hassled by your rangers.

Common sense would say that when they decided what was open, or not open, what was deemed to be 'park land' or whatever... a map was used to make this determination.

Maps have numbers on them, 'roolz' are generally referencing the numbers. You can't really say, oh you can go by that garbage can, but not by the rotting whale carcass so on and so forth and call it a law. Laws tend to be a bit more cohesive, ie you can't go north of 54 degrees latitude or west of 185 degrees longitude. You get the idea.

With this insight, you can now go and Find what map they used when making these 'roolz' and there you will find the coordinates they used when making these roolz up.

Once you got the boundary numbers you will know where you can and can not hunt. Granted roolz tend to be subject to interpretation from time to time but at least this way you have a legal precedence to stand on when you do dig... if you follow the roolz that is.

When ranger rick comes by and says, you can't dig here, ask him, ok, exactly where is here? Exactly what parts are 'off limits' make him show you the 'numbers' of the official 'law' or 'rule'. When you get the deer in the headlights look, talk nicely to him and say, ahh but I made a few calls and know differently, why don't you go talk to your supervisor, and when you learn the real numbers, come back if you want to apologize, because I already know that I *can* dig here, because *I* read the roolz.... unless you are trying to override the governor of florida and rewrite the roolz that is.... in which case you got a whole new venue to pursue.

There are some other angles you can work as well.... be creative!!

Well..... think about this one: Maps, Posted signs, Rules there just guidelines.
stick to the code! Dig,Dig. ;D

i looked at the map in the link and thats not the same map i found. the map i found looked more like a pdf of a handout map like they have at the visitors centers. it showed NPS land around the fort and on the other side of the road but the tip of the beach wasnt NPS and was listed as a county park. you would park on NPS land and lug your MD'er across NPS land in order to get to what was listed as a county park.

re-tek,

Did you find anything. I was there the other day, found a few
coins. but no relic's that run. The NPS Rangers have a GPS reading's, it's there " so-call "
boundary line on the beach. it's about 30ft straight out east, down from the signed at end of the ramp. I haven't had any problems there, but once. because I was to high. but during the summertime, there's a troll at the ticket booth makes a deal of everything when it comes to MD's.
the safe way in the area, stay close to the water.

good hunting Sapper

i didnt find squat... beach looked resanded.

Re-tek,

Once the sand goes out, it's a great place. everything is there, from spanish, french, dutch. even from the civil war: if we ever get a good storm!! pull- out some
SAND!! Just stay around the Ramp area close to the Water: if you don't know, the beach ramp
was the the INLET back in 1500's. there's so much there. just to much sand!!

good luck next time.

what sapper said, sadly many of the beaches, hugenout included are under a terrible amount of sand. We need a friggin hurricane to pass close again...

oh wait, I take that back, ill be on emergency callout if that happens, and no MD for me >:(

Was just out there today, oh man did I find junk. I ended up leaving because I was so loaded down with crap. Iron pipe, fencing, aluminum can pieces. (Plus the tide was coming in) I did find a lead ball that I can't ID though, posted in What Is It?
