Matanzas Inlet

Just as you pass rattle snake island and enter the intercostal directly west there are huge sand dunes. Those sand dunes are spoil dumps from the dredge of the inlet.

There may be possible booty in dem dar hills!

There is a ton of ground to cover but there may be some nice stuff from any ships that went down in the inlet or just outside. Maybe even some canon balls from Fort Matanzas.

Could be worth a look.. I may go give it a shot this summer. You will need a boat though.

South of me a bit in the river, go for it; but I don't know what the marine patrol was told about boats parked and people up there though. Same few guys patrol the water, always cool with me, and probably just ask you to leave if there were a problem. There shouldn't be, but you know how the DNR, etc. are about their precious sand dunes, on the beach, and probably manmade or not in the river, wouldn't surprise me! don't want to disturb the threatened Anastasia Beach Mouse, for god's sake... ;).
Here's a river search hint you probably already know... go along and note where people are hanging out in groups on the shore, and wading, then hit them at a low tide weekday, might find a ring or chain, methinks. HH!

Right there on rattle snake island 100 yards or so from the fort people are parked there all summer long. Sadly I don't have a machine that is good in wetsand or water :-\ I should probably go buy one, but i'm poor at the moment.

Hi guys,

I like going to that area too, have been a couple of times. I head out to the beach area East of the park entrance, close to where the original inlet used to be. I'd like to get out there during a good low tide as well.

It's a little tough digging, some of the sand is like Daytona, that cement type mixture, starts to cave in and become soup once you are down about 4 or 5 inches.

Just talked to the Site Manager today for the Matanzas National Monument. The whole area is considered a National Park from the beach access road to the North, all the way and including the peninusula that extends under the bridge. He says all the way to the mean high tide line. (This is South Anastasia Island) Rattlesnake island is part of the park as well, obviously.

Any MDing has to be done North of the beach access road on the ocean side. I haven't checked out what kind of access there is on the river side North of the park entrance.

I did not ask him about the sand bars, but it seems that you could detect them at low tide, especially if you had access by water. I think carrying the MDer over the park walkways to wade to the sandbars would be asking for trouble.

Jack

I was at the park a couple of weeks ago. We MD'ed for a couple of hours and found several fishing leaders, two pennies. The beach was really clean. As we exited the the lady collecting money from people driving on the beach told us MD'ers are illegal to use here. Another place off limits!

Jack, I got the same story from the head park ranger, both sides of A1A south of the park entrance are off limits,It's ok to dig a hole big eneugh to bury a monster truck,BUT by God don't metal detect . same halfass routine you get from the state.Better the stuff is lost forever than someone without a degree ever finding anything even if it's only loose change. I've had much better luck at villano beach. flagler beach has been good to me also.I hunt witha white's beach hunter ID, but a garrett ace 250 will soon join the hunt....HH.

Hey OceanBeamer,

Yeah, well, in any event, the road that gives beach access on the East side is actually closer to the location of the Inlet back a few hundred years ago. I think it was actually right about where they have the wooden walk over near the parking area, but that is only a couple hundred feet away.

I still like going there and wading out in the water to MD. It is still a historically significant area.

I'm going to be down in Sebastian this weekend for the big get together, but if you would like to hook up one late afternoon or weekend to MD over there, I'd be game for that.

Jack

uh careful with the word "historical" it might give state folks ideas about shuting off the area--- they do "prowl" the net you know. Ivan

OK Ivan,

No conspiracy theories please!

Jack

Hey,

Moe (fl) and I are going to head over to Matanzas after work on Friday for a few hours. We're just probably going to hunt on the North side of the beach access road on the ocean side. Come on over if you have time. Low tide is showing about 6 P.M.

Just park in the lot, PLEASE DO NOT TRY TO DRIVE DOWN ONTO THE BEACH!!! I will not be responsible for my uncontrolled laughter when you are sunk knee deep in the sugar sand.

I'll be in a Lincoln Towncar, either 1985 or 2000, depending on my mood.

L8R, Jack

Ive been there a few times, and ive been on some of the places where you need a boat to reach too. Found some pretty interesting stuff. I have a skiff that drafts about 6 inches so can get into really shallow places, beach it and have at it.

The rules of where and where not, yah big Pita, go here, no don't go there, and the roolz change from ranger to ranger, depending on if the one you asked detects themselves. Trying to ask the state or other 'official entity' gets more ambiguous, half of them are even more clueless. I just ask a ranger, get a name and badge number so if there is a kerfluffle, I can say hey, so and so badge number 12234 said it was ok.

If im out on a sandbar or a little 'island' that is now showing because it's low tide, they are more than welcome to wade out to me to see what I am up to.

Honestly though FWC has shown a few times and between them all, they really don't bother me much, they seem more interested in the fishing pole I have thrown over the side (hey gotta get the best of both worlds .. why not) than what I am digging up or why even.

What's in the sack, oh im just picking up trash officer, kind of like the boyscouts motto, leave a place cleaner than what you found it ;) ;D

Aaron,

You're too funny. I did call and talked to the "Site Manager" as he is called and he specifically told me what was considered Park and what is not. He did say that technically, the park is a few, maybe 10s of feet North of the beach access road. He said once we reach the property line of the condos, we are home free.

I have been there a few times and the beach guards are always nice and stop to let me know they are closing up the gate at 7:30 etc. Since I don't park on the beach, it doesn't much matter to me, I usually leave around 8.

I would like to boat over to the sand bar as well, if you're willing and your boat has room for company. I can even bring my pole and tackle box too, think I forgot how to fish since I got the MDer.

Jack

ugh jack you have just the opposite problem as me. Since i got the boat ive been doing more time fishing and less swinging the coil.

this weekend is out, and my job schedule changes monday so im not sure what days ill be working or hours, however if you are serious we can make a plan to meet up somewhere, it'd probably be easier for me to drive the boat down to st auggy or wherever is closer to where you want to go, put in there and you show me where you want to head to and we can make it a trip. If ya dont want to fish that's cool too, we'll just do whatever we want, where we are allowed to and just have fun, afterall that's what its about or did I miss sumtin ere ;D

feel free to send me a PM or e mail me and we can make this plan more solid.
Aaron

Just wanted to let anyone know that Moe (fl) and I are not going to meet at Matanzas Inlet tomorrow afternoon as planned.

We'll be getting together again soon. I may be going late in the day Saturday and/or Sunday during low tide.

Jack

Arron,

get your 4x4, go by summer haven, or to rattlesnake Is. boat ramp launch
in there. go from there. I detect matanzas ramp a lot. the only thing there is some old bat!
at ticket booth: rats you out!!, but you can detect both sides, on the right side just stay close
to the water.

ahh I think I know the near dead you are speaking of.

What you do is, you take your garage door opener with you and look her sternly in the eyes and wave it at her menacingly and say, you open your trap and im shutting off your pacemaker... thrust it in her direction a few times.... she'll either leave or call the cops, screaming you are trying to shut off her pacemaker, at which point they will tell her to go home and take another shot of geritol and go change her depends... problem solved ;D ;D

thanks for the tip, I should be free this weekend so if you want I can find my way there and we can boat out a bit somewhere and do some detecting.. or fishing... or both...

aaron

I might be around there on Saturday, not sure. Thinking about bringing the family up to Anastasia park, maybe on Sunday. If so, I might go out to Matanzas for a few hours and mess around.

Maybe I'll see some of ya there!!

Jack

to all,

I was there today, need 4x4 again, and "yes the old bat was there",
telling me no detecting here: :P the best part was, the national park ranger
watching me: she was yelling; he turn around and left. so I kept on digging. I dug
everything: it look like a mine field went off.

sapper

sapper, messing with the bi*ch... ok cool BUT leaving holes that look like a minefield went off NOT COOL.

That is exactly the stuff she needs to prove her point, I guarantee after you left and left all the holes, she called the cops again and put on a fit on how you ruined the beach with your holes etc etc..... you know what, she has a valid point. They will see that and make a point of it.

Rule #1 always fill in your holes....

it's stuff like that, that gives people like her, the ammunition they need to shut down the beaces to metal detectors, and especially in the st auggy area, shut them down for good.

be cool dude, don't ruin it for all of us.
