Hello folks, been sometime since I've been on here but I can tell you I've not stop doing what some of you on here may remember me doing. That's finding old stuff. I posted this in the fossil forum yesterday after I got it cleaned up some more.I found it Sunday afternoon metal detecting & it was dark before I finally got it dug out. So it soaked all day Monday while I worked until I got home. That's when I started trying to get the clay & shell off & posted it in fossil forum asking a few questions. I still think I can get it a little cleaner so it continues to soak today & likely I'll try again tomorrow. The metal detecting finds we're limited that day cause of the tusk find but I'LL add them to this post.

Stumbling upon a tusk poking out of the banks of a creek/ravine is a bucket-list find for me, congratulations! My grandfather found what turned out to be the skeleton of an extinct bison eroding from a bank back in the 30s (excavated academically and assembled in some school) and I'd read of great megafaunal discoveries decades ago in the same Illinois waterways I've scoured for goodies, but no luck so far. Anyway, it seems like that creek is worth keeping an eye on, good luck finding some molars to go with the tusk!

Best find I've ever seen on TNet! Your finds collections and displays are awesome. Thanks for letting us have a look at a serious hunter's collection. Best of luck!

Well tonight I got it coated in a solution of duco & acetone. After having it drying since yesterday. What I have seems to be pretty solid so far. Not sure about what I'm going to do about attaching the smaller pieces. May just lay them loose in what ever display I come up with.
Before I go I'd like to thank everyone for the comments & the Banner votes. Not sure what kept it from making it but it's happened in the past as well??? Any how I got to find & share it with you folks. Best to you all on your hunts I will continue on my way with my adventures & keep adding to my collection. Until next time... Take Care.

This is something that I've desperately wanted to find since I started detecting 8 years ago. :laughing7:

a very nice find.

Is finding a tusk a first for you? Has any other bones or tusks been found in that area that you are aware of?

I did comment earlier. But, THE MAN FOUND A MASTODON TUSK!!! I went out today and got lost! HE FOUND A MASTODON TUSK!!! Are you kidding me!!! I can't even sleep knowing this. Did you actually find this in NC? Congratulations, again!!!
