So last night I was cruising around the city in my truck in the freezing cold. Picking up junk every now and then at the curbs. I scored two garbage bags full of old vinyls, some boxes of household junk and a nice Italian vase - then at this big apartment building someone was tossing out everything! This is not an uncommon sight as many of the apartments are owned by very old people who live alone. So I'm guessing someone died and everything was being tossed out. All the furniture, all the pots and pans, all the small trinkets - most in black garbage bags. I tossed ten or so of the bags into the truck and called it a night.

This morning it was too cold to leave the house, so it wasn't until around 1pm that I went out and began sorting through all the junk. To make a long story short - this was the motherload of trash finds. Besides netting me a bunch of really cool antiques I scored a big gold hoard! I have never found this much gold at once ever before. The hoard consists of one large 14K gold ring, one hefty 14k gold chain-link bracelet, and one massive 18K gold bracelet. Nearly a grand of gold by weight! Combined it all weighs 30.7 grams! Holy smokes! :treasurechest::blackbeard: - Argh!

Hey I think it's great that these items aren't going to the landfill. It's a real shame to think about how much goes to waste. My buddy was just telling me how much precious metal such as gold and silver ends up in the sewers. There was a big article about it. I'll look for it

There was a smiliar story about the same thing in Japan awhile back that I read. It seems that their kids are bad about flushing Gold items, a lot is in sink drains and sometimes are flushed by the adults due to fights.

I read that article too.
They said that there is alot of precious metal down there in the pipes but it would cost more than it's worth to create a method to recover it.
Still makes you think, how many diamonds and gold rings we have all come within a few inches of under our feet without knowing it.

Yeah, I visited New York City once when I was stationed at Fort Dix, New Jersey for AIT in the U.S. Army. While walking the many streets sightseeing, I stopped at every grate on the sidewalks to see what lay below. We saw quite bit of change and some items that appeared to be jewelry but we could never figure out how to get the grates off.

I went through the Drive-Thru at a close by McDonalds a few years back and the lady accidentally dropped some of my' change. I attempted to retrieve it but the lady quickly pulled more out of the cash register till and gave it to me. That was a bummer because when I looked out my truck's window, I could see that the expansion joint in the concrete between the buiding and driveway was very wide and there must have been $25 to $50 in change in that wide crack. I should have went back after they closed and cleaned the Drive-Thru driveway for them, LOL! It wasn't long after that, that they had the concrete (and apparently all of the change) removed and a new concrete driveway poured but this time, they eliminated the expansion joint.

Saves space in the land fill.

Makes you picture all the gold jewelry lost in the landfills - probably enough to fill the trunk of a car to the brim!

holy cow. it's crazy what people throw away. glad you found it before it ended up at the dump. dang, that's amazing

Is search the dump too, so I may have still caught it :laughing7:

Whoever put the trash out is very lazy.
Nice finds, just what made you load those trash bags compared to the other thousands of trash bags out for trash that day? Was it just because it looked to be a cleaned out apartment?
Amazing

Absolutely a fantastic hunt! Congratulations on the GOLD.

One of my buddies made a LOT of money dumpster diving simply because he saw value where others only saw trash. A finely tuned sense of history combined with a decent intellect equaled money for him. And - a lot of neat stuff didn't end up in the landfill.

The other commonly overlooked place is plumbing traps. Gold and diamonds don't tend to go down the drain, but end up in the trap. Plumbers, of course, know about this and I'm sure salvage them whenever they can.

Unbelievable mate, great score!
