MASSACHUSETTS?? IDK? PIN? BUTTON PROTOTYPE?

dug this a few years back in a old yard.
front looks like a button but the back is filled with a hard reddish resin or something and a small hole to one side.could a straight pin have been molded into where the hole was? or was it a button prototype of some sort?
mind you the house is across from where scovill's brass once sat.many home in this area were occupied by scovill brass employees.scovills made so many buttons and i'm sure most of you are familiar with the name.
any help or a ball park year on this would be appreciated.

Maybe comparing the seal style with other buttons can help date it.

I am thinking most likely civil war reunion pin related.

at a glance it kinda looks like the front half of a two piece button.. you may be right that someone who worked for the button company may have taken it home with them.. the red resin is still a mystery.. might have been part of the manufactoring process.. just my hmo.

I have a button just like it. Its civil war era. Dont know if yours is a pin or not? Mine was a 2 piece button, and I believe had a scoville back mark. And Herbie is right it is the Mass. state seal. I can get a pic of mine later tonight if your interested.
