Need help identifying the two "stamps" on the back of this Masonic Pendant along with the "etchings" on the right hand side...to the right of the right-most "stamp.

The LEFT "stamp" reads ... "M W & S"

The RIGHT side has four separate "stamps" ... from left to right....
1st - "9"
2nd - ".375"
3rd - looks like an anchor lying on its side
4th - "W"

Most interesting are the "etchings' located to the right of the fourth right "stamp" and are etched on two lines:

1st line - "1784 M"
2nd line - "4 a"

Thanks for any help!!!

GoingDown :)

Re: Masonic Pendant

M W & S is the jeweler's mark.

9 is for 9K gold.

.375 [fine] is the same as 9K gold.

The anchor is the assay mark for Birmingham, England.

The "W" is the date mark. Unfortunately, it's too small to identify the style of lettering; however, it may be the "W" used to denote 1921-22 or 1946-47.

I wonder if the etchngs then (in light of the possible date of early 1900's) are some sort of Masonic identifiers....lodge #? etc......

It seems likely that they had some sort of special significance to the owner, either Masonic or personal— but what? Sorry, but beyond a bit of help with the hallmarks, I don't have a clue! Hopefully, someone else can solve the mystery.

Re: Masonic Pendant

I think the other markings denote a Prince Hall lodge:

"Prince Hall Freemasonry derives from historically unique events which led to a tradition of separate, predominantly African American, Freemasonry in North America. Prince Hall Masonry has always been regular in all respects except constitutional separation.

In 1775, an African American named Prince Hall[15] was initiated into an Irish Constitution Military Lodge then in Boston, Massachusetts, along with fourteen other African-Americans, all of whom were free-born. When the Military Lodge left North America, the African-Americans were given the authority to meet as a Lodge, form Processions on the days of the Saints John, and conduct Masonic funerals, but not to confer degrees, nor to do other Masonic Work. In 1784 these individuals applied for, and obtained, a Lodge Warrant from the Premier Grand Lodge of England and formed African Lodge, Number 459 (Premier Grand Lodge of England)."

Re: Masonic Pendant

Looks like a standard necklace, bracelet or key chain charm composed of the most recognizable Masonic symbol, the rule and the compases and the letter G. I am not seeing anything to make it special? Monty, looking to the East

Re: Masonic Pendant

Kay and I both have stared until our eyes hurt and we still do not see any etchings! Is it on the front or back and what do you mean by "right of the 4th right stamp"?

Then again it could just mean the date it was received such as 8/4/71 discounting the M. Oh and I see it now! Most people who are not Masons tend to make too much out of secret symbols and such, when in fact it is more simple than you would ever imagine. 2 B 1 ask 1 for example. Monty

Heck no, I won't get into any trouble and as a matter of fact I am proud of it. The Shrine hospital is part and parcel sponsored by the Shriners who are just upper degree Masons. Look what good thing it has done for burned and deformed or crippled children. I am not active like I once was but once a mason always a mason, kinda' like the Marine Corps without the "Semper Fi". Well, probably not a good comparison but you know what I mean. And Masons are not devil worshippers like I've heard some morons say. In fact you can't be a Mason if you are an athiest. And secrets? Most of the secrets aren't really secret anymore, too many ex-masons have given them away and you can find out most if not all of them on the internet. They're only secret in that you do not discuss them with anyone but brother Masons. The rituals and rites all represent good or good deeds, being kind and helpful to your fellow man, things like that. It may have been different in its infancy way back in the time of Knights Templar, etc, but that's history. If it were otherwise I wouldn't have joined. All you have to do to join is ask a mason and if you are of good character you most likely will be admitted. so, see I didn't give away any secrets but I have basically told you everything you will ever need to know about Free Masonry. Hello Monty,

I would like to ask you a question.........Is Free Masonry a religion or a brotherhood?.....My uncle is a Mason but as far as I know he was raised Catholic just like me.....now I am kinda becoming Christian....well I guess I am trying to find a better relationship with good.....anyways........I always wanted to become a Mason...I guess the question is; Can I be a Catholic/Christian and still be a Mason..........

All the best,

Chagy........

Of course you can be a Mason, just ask your uncle and I'm sure he would be thrilled to sponsor you. Free Masonry is a brotherhood and the only religious requirement is that you believe in a God, or supreme order to the universe, something or some force greater than ours. Monty
