Cincinnati, Ohio
My brother-in-law found this ring behind a wall in his bathroom. His house is an old stately mansion in Cincinnati, Ohio. He has no idea how the ring ended up there, but it did. I took a bunch of pictures of the symbols on the ring for you experts to decipher. The specs on the ring are as follows: Ring is marked 14K, and weighs a little over 14 grams. It is inscribed with "Alfred McGill Norwich, Conn. March 12, 1906". I think it is McGill, but I am not sure. There is also a phrase inscribed that I couldn't decipher b/c it is a little worn inside the ring. The one symbol that I recognized was the "32", which I think stands for a 32nd degree Mason(Highest level?).
I am wondering if someone could help figure out the other symbols, and possibly connect the name to someone.
My bro-in-law was going to sell it for scrap, but I think it is worth more. Anyone have any idea if the ring has any intrinsic value to collectors. If someone really likes it, they could PM me to discuss purchase.
Thanks in Advance,
Jon Dickinson.

Re: Mason Symbols on Gold Ring

Nice find...
I'd gladly buy it from your brother in law for scrap price! ;D

A couple/few years ago I found a small 10k plain masonic band that I sold on ebay for over 120.00.
Was only about 7 or 8 grams...and gold was about $15 a gram then, 10k far less tho...figure half

Ummm, yeah that ring is worth far more than melt...but hey, if he wants to sell it for scrap, who am I to argue! Weigh it and give me a price :laughing7:

Re: Mason Symbols on Gold Ring-UPDATE

I am happy to say that this exercise convinced my bro-in-law to not scrap the mason ring. He also decided to keep it. I want to thank everyone for posting and reserching the ring. I think this is the best result I could have hoped for.
Regards,
Jon Dickinson.

My ...GGGGrandad was a Mason ...George Mason. He authored our Bill of Rights. GW's neighbor and best friend. Declined offer to run for president.

Mason Symbols on Gold Ring-Final Update-Ebay

I know that I stated the ring was going to be kept by my bro-in-law, but things have changed. I made the mistake of showing my sister-in-law the posts from this topic, and she has dollar signs in her eyes. I agreed to sell the ring on ebay for them, but I stipulated the auction starts at a $1, and they get what they get. If anyone is interested in following the auction it is ebay #250563775302 started on January 14th, and ending January 24th. If this is inappropriate to post, let me know and I will remove it. I'm really not cruising for bids, I am highly confident the ring will bring a value over and above what the gold melter guys offered. With this option, at least someone gets to keep it.
Regards,
Jon Dickinson.

Cypress,
I think I should keep it open until the final mystery is solved about how much it is worth/sell for. Thanks for all your help on it.
Romeo- Thanks for the bids. I could see your bids, but there is another bidder still on top.

I have recieved a ton of questions about the ring from people, and have 20 something people watching the auction. I know I am having fun watching it.

Regards,
Jon Dickinson.

I hope someone worthy of wearing it buys it. If I had continued on to the 32nd degree I would bid on it. It is a beautiful piece with lots of historical value alone. Monty

What an incredible find

You write that your bro-in-law found this behind his bathroom wall? Just curious to how old the house is? Does your bro-in-law know who the prior owners were? Could of this gentleman been doing some work on the bathroom himself some years back & perhaps lost it there? Has your bro-in-law done any searches for the name on the ring in the area he resides?

Sorry for the questions, just things I reckon I am curious about . . . and they may help with more info on the ring itself.

:D

Up to $350 as we speak. Sorry, I don't think I could have made myself sell the ring. Too historical. In my own mind, I would have found out more about the individual, where he is buried, etc. Surely he had some family, maybe a sister or brother, thus nieces and nephews. Census could speak, too. Great find, though. Good luck with it. - Noodle

Sold for $355.00 I think? I thought it would have brought more. Fun to watch anyway. Monty
