Marlin 39-A

With the forend completely finished Iā€™m working on the butt. All the sanding is finished and this is what it looks like wet with the second coat of truoil. It will be completely finished and on the gun this week hopefully. View attachment 2176241View attachment 2176242

After it cures for a while it will be ready to carve. Iā€™m think of doing a similar pattern as this.View attachment 2176243

I did some fish scales on this hammer handle I made. It provides the best grip ever. Far better than standard checkering. Iā€™ve been carving wood since ā€˜11 so this oak leaf and scale pattern wonā€™t be a problem.View attachment 2176244
What year was that one sir ?

Itā€™s finished. The wood is from two different trees and they donā€™t match that well. None the less, the butt stock I broke 54 yrs ago in my youth is now replaced. The butt is all natural color. No stain, just Truoil finish.

I really like the way the butt looks.
Kind of gives it the look of what oil gives wood after decades of handling. (Just my interpretation)

It is a beauty and the two different wood colors just gives it a story IMO

Iā€™m not too happy with the mismatch. I stained the forend trying to make it match better but I think staining it made it worse. I think Iā€™ll strip the forend and refinish it with no stain. When I mill walnut in the future I need to keep wood from the same tree together for the 2-piece stocks. I mainly make one piece rifle stocks and itā€™s never an issue. This is my next milling job. The crotch is where the beautiful figured wood comes from.
