I have to start of by saying I do not collect NIFC myself. But yesterday going thru a bow of Halves I noticed about 20 or so 2003-2006 P&D Halves that had been marked. I could not stop thinking about the people on this forum who do collect these and how wrong it is for someone to just mark them up like this. Every NIFC in this box was marked.... POOP! :dontknow: :icon_scratch: John HH

It's a shame to see such a nice coin get marked, it had the potential to be in the hands of a collector, now hundreds of CRH'ers will look at that coin and think about the person who marked it. My batch of halves I am working on had a few marked NIFC's as well, but many unmarked. I am against marking any coin- casino halves or the shiny ones.

My guess is the person had no idea these were NIFC. To be honest, until this post, neither did I - I knew about the 87s. I think marking coins is a huge waste of time, but to each his own.

Can't the mark be cleaned off? A little acetone should take it off. Would that hurt the coin?

Acetone won't damage the metal or toning on a coin (many collectors don't consider a careful dip in acetone to be "cleaning" of the kind that is verboten), and it will probably remove the ink, but the marker may have caused permanent discoloration.

Fortunately, the newer NIFC coins are not a rare or hard to find for a collector. If I ran across an '87, or a particularly a '70-D like that, I'd be pretty upset.

1987's have higher mintages than some of the new NIFC's.. I used to save them but now only if they are in great shape.

Agreed. I'm still missing some NIFC for my book. I would hate to find one that I need with a mark on the face. I'm not a fan of marking coins. >:(
