Found this, only one like it I've seen around here, so far. Anyone know what it is? DSCN2006.JPGDSCN2008.JPG

Appears to be quartz related. Try breaking off a piece and look at the lustre.

OK Eu citzen, will try that. There is a lot of quartz around where I live, common everywhere I suppose. This rock is odd looking because of the "veins" running through it, made me think of marble. Thank you for the suggestion, will let you know what it looks like.

Pretty jade Turkish man, guess "veins" run through many kinds of rock.

Veins can cut through most rocks. Looks like it's quartz veins that cut through your rock.

Marble is more "grainy" and can react to acid due to carbonates. Hardness varies depending on impurities from silicates.

Ok, believe you EU, thanks for the info! Didn't think we had Marble here anyway, but it is a pretty rock!

There's a lot of marble further north in NM. Belen. I'm guessing further north because we still don't know where your fire agates are. So I'm playing clue.
Actually the State Capital is walled with the Belen marble and it's very different from what most think of marble. Nice stuff.

Hey hvacker, the fire agates are usually found where there use to be water ;)

Wasn't long ago that your entire state was underwater. California is a pretty recent addition to North America.
And most of the state isn't planning on sticking around for long either.
Are you going to have oceanfront property when the Sea of Cortez opens up all the way to San Fransisco bay?
If you haven't read it yet I recomend "Assembling California" by John McPhee.

Yes, you're right about that! Sort'a glad I'm not there anymore (CA)......now just have to worry about the "fire" below NM....do have little quakes here also. ps on the "water" thing, I was trying to give hvacker a little "clue" on the agate thing!
