Mandan 'Rainbow flint' Corn these are not artifacts but maybe still of interest

today i took these images of some Mandan Hidatsa corn that e and johnand the late great Kelly Twitko has grown this year at the garden site of the village site

on the two left pieces are some lavender parching corn "Mandan Red Clay"

on the 4 right are the traditional "Rainbow Flint" Mandan Indian "Bride Corn"

funny i grew these this year;......the red clay corn is only 3 feet tall when mature an has only 1 or 2 small 6 inch cobs per stalk

now OTOH is the 'rainbow flint' which is 7 or 8 feet tall and has 2 or 3 cobs or 4 and is grown prolific in a few small areas for flour or cattle feed

Awesome stuff, Steve. I would go insane if it weren't for my garden. I wonder if that corn would grow here?

Very nice, the "Rainbow Flint" is good looking stuff. We grew some "Bloody Butcher" this year, it was 12' tall with 2-3 cobs per stalk, not as colorful as yours though. Thanks for the view.

I always thought Indian corn was so pretty. I have several ears hanging from my display wall behind the wood heater. Oops, old photo...thought they were showing but not so. Old farm tools & the hornet's nests. Corn is hanging in the right side edge.

did you grow any this yr? I planted, but it got washed out. We had several gulley washers this spring & each time I planted it happened. Now we are all praying for rain, & thankful for the little drizzle we had a few days ago.

...dang it...i keep forgetting to plant it!...every year, and I have a great spot too!

There is corn over my head every direction I look and its keeping me off my campsites so I don't have much love for the yellow stuff but it does make me enjoy the colorful ears that much more, nice work

here are a few more that i just picked
i am gonna send some of the seeds to a few of my Tnet friends

hey thanks verde
that rainbow flint used to be a popular crop 60 years ago for feed
the whole plant was made into silage
a lot of it grew over 7 feet tall and had 4 cobs per stalk

That's some really great heirloom corn there Steve, wouldn't mind having some seeds to grow, esp. the Mandan red clay.

Anyway here's some Glass Gem ( a flour/popcorn) that was created by a Cherokee guy crossing strains.

I grew it this year, I have Kelly's address so I thought I'd send you both some ears to check out and or grow if you want.

Take care of the John Deere!

Kyle
