I have been metal detecting since my early twenties off and on Chester County, Pa. Using a cheap $49.95 detector and finding things around my parents farm. like wagon wheels, pot belly stove lids and one penny, but I was hooked for life. Got married to my teenage sweetheart and raised a family. When to kids were grown I went out and bought myself a decent detector a Fisher. Took it to a local fishing spot on the Brandywine Creek and first pass I dug a men's gold tiger eye ring! I was then totally sold out.
Went a few trips and my wife was interested, so off we went did a local park and she was in it with a passion! been around fifteen years of going out every Saturday & Sunday and any days off we could find! during these years we have found a lot of nice finds, it was my personal goal to find no less then 100 coins on each outing.
As many of you we stored each find in a chest and showed it off proudly
and when we got enough newer money we would upgrade our detectors to the latest and greatest or buy old rare coins with it. We sure dug a lot of gold Through out our hunts and some were broken necklaces or bracelets, one ear ring, a metal or cross and etc. then It hit me! so we went through our chest and dug out all poor condition gold objects. Took them to a buddy in Delaware, who was training as a jeweler, and he bought a silver 8 reale
from the Smithsonian institute that was part of Mel Fisher's treasure from the Atocha, it was the real thing and had a certificate from the institute. He melted our gold fines down and using a mold from the silver 8 reale made me a 8 reale. Went to another jeweler and got it appraised telling him how it came to be and he stated that I increased the value of the gold 10 times over!
