I returned to the permission where I found the 1794 Liberty Cap and the NJ Copper the other day. In just over an hour, I was able to find the following: A flat button (plain), and sporting button or clip, a beat up IHP (no date), a Draped Bust LC (no date), an 1821 Matron Head LC (semi-key date), two 1809 Classic Head Half Cents, and my favorite, and first for me, a Hibernia! The Hibernia is paper thin, the size of a LC, and reads Georgius III Rex. I can see the 17 on the left side of the harp, and maybe an 8 on the other. If anyone has any more insight on this coin, I would love to hear. As always, thanks for looking.

Well, I'm having trouble ID'ing the bust on the Irish halfpenny, and can't tell from the pics if it reads Georgivus II or III. If its a George III and your correct on the 8, then its either a 1781 or 2. If its a George II, and you are correct on the 8, then its a 1748, but it doesn't look right for that to me. If its a later George II variety then you are incorrect on the 8. Overall, nice finds, I'd be on cloud 9 for that lot any day.

Does that make it a half penny?

Yes, halfpenny and too bad it's not better, because it's a counterfeit, and a little on the crude side. It has what I'm quite sure is the younger bust which was only used for the years 1766 and 1769, so I don't think that's an 8.... even though there was no rules for counterfeits a young bust 178_ Irish halfpenny would be a very rare coin... not just to dig, a very rare one in general, so it's probably just the deterioration and corrosion that makes it look like an 8.

Thank you for the information. Does the fact that it is paper thin add to your identification or were the real ones this thin as well?

Not a surprise it would be light weight, but it's clearly a counterfeit die that struck it as the quality of the lettering is not there. It's a more interesting find than a genuine coin.

I have to admit, it was bent like a taco when I dug it, because of how thin it was I thought it was a button, so I straightened it, only then did I realize it was a coin.

Congrats on an epic hunt!

Well it worked out not bad, you got it flat without breaking it. Being that thin is yet another factor that makes it a little more interesting, because even the counterfeits don't tend to be that thin. An advanced collector might be able to see enough to give you more.... I'll pass it on and see if I get any feedback.

I am 99% certain my coin is the lower coin, helps to explain the reason for the last two numbers of the date being unreadable

Wow. That's a nice little honey hole. My most coppers from one site is 3. Congrats!!!

As I said above your coin has the young bust which was only used on the 66 and 69, and unless my eyes are playing tricks on me that is 100% not your coin.
