magnetometers

Hi Jason

Thanks for replying. What I have is account of a meteor that burst over this area. The search area is about a 7mi x 10mi. I have a minelab with the 12" x 24". I'm not using that coil for the search, because most of the meteor will be small and right now I just need to find any piece of it. I was just wondering if the magnetometer would be the way to cover more area, faster. But again I don't know how to work it so I don't know if this would be the way to go.

Well Kim, I'm not sure about that one either. With small fragments of iron I'm not sure the mag would help that much, better wait for someone else to give a more educated answer. My experience is one tow over a lake, and it was during the class for the mag. Good Luck, maybe Dick or someone can shed more light on the right way to go.

Hi Kim:

Not knowing the metals contained in a meteorite I can't really
answer your question. When you gave the search area dimensions
I was kind of set back. You are talking about a very large search
area. This will take a long time regardless of what equipment you
plan to use.

A mag will work if the meteorite contains ferrous metal. A good
metal detector will work better as it will indicate the presence of
all types of metals. This makes the target appear larger and a little
easier to detect. But again, you have a large search area.

I would suggest that you get a large search coil for your metal
detector and mount it on a non-metallic cart and push or pull it
around with the coil very near the ground at all times. This way
you can cover allot of area in a short time without working yourself
to death.

Just keep in mind that an area that has been searched will never
be searched again. Once you cross off an area you have to be sure
that nothing is there otherwise you will never move from one spot.
Keep accurate locations of all areas searched. Use a ruler for
measurements. Overlap your search lines so no place gets missed.
Use natural landmarks in your search area maps.

I wish you luck

And DIG everything
