Hey all, not sure if anyone is interested in old magazines but I found an old caved in house in the wood today and it was filled with old magazines. I grabbed a few and might go back for the rest. There was at least a stack of 100 magazines in excellent condition. Saturday Evening Post's from the 30's, Look Magazine from the 30's and early 40's, McCalls from the early 40's. And that was just a few off the top that I grabbed. I also found an old book called "Convict Life at the Minnesota State Prison" Stillwater , Minnesota dated 1909 Second Addition 100,000 copies, and that's in excellent condition too.

How big is the house? Is it out in a forest or a farm? Kind of spooky for an old house to sit for that long and not have the city go in and take safety measures.

It's small, maybe 3-4 rooms. It's in the woods, I checked for No Trespassing signs and couldn't find any.

And the furniture? Reach down into the upholstered furniture for coins that might have been lost when people used to sit in the chairs. I did once.....a 1918 (P) S L quarter in VG condition.

The living room is the only one I can't access. That's where the roof collapsed. I can see old couches, an end table with drawers and an ancient tv.

Now that I think about it, I'm not sure if this was someones property. I just happened upon it. I'd hate to see all those magazines gone after the rest of the roof caves in.

Ummm.....sorry to sound like an a&&, but yeah, it is someones property and thats called theft. You might be bending over picking up some magazines and get a butt full of lead. Just my 2 cents on the matter.

I was thinking the same thing. I'm sure somebody owns, the property, owns the house, owns the contents. Whether or not they want the contents is a valid question. Best to try to find out the owner and ask if you can have what is theirs.

Which is a good idea, Other than the fact that the stuff has obviously been sitting in there for 80+ years and if someone does own it, they don't seem to care. I'd rather save some of the stuff rather than see it rot away.

Go back and see if you can find some old mail, that might point you where to start.

The only mail I found was from a bunch from 1927.

Here is the old book I found.

Do you have permission to this site where all these items are?

Like I said, I just came upon this house in the woods. The roof has caved in and there is no door or windows on it. There wasn't any No Trespassing signs or anything.

well it seems to me that someone must own it unless it is "public forest land"-- clearly who ever owns it doesn't seem to care A HOOT = ABOUT IT --BUT LEGAL IS LEGAL -AND NOT IS NOT * --if its open public land -- times a wasting --but if not to be right --find out the owner and get the A ok first --once you get the OK clear er out but good --check in the old couches fer lost coins -- in those days --dimes and quarters and halfs were all silver -- large mint mark on rear war era nickles are also 35% silver as well --some old books are collectible plus if it seems as intact as you say --i'm sure there are antique things and tools and silverware / depession glass and such --it sounds like a plunders gold mine of possiblities

I hope some old hermit type person was not sitting on the couch when ithe roof caved in , if so it would explain why every things still "there"--its odd to find homes basically still intact belongs wize but it happens --might have belonged to a old only child type hermit person who once they passed on in a hospital / nursing home --no one know to come clean out the place * most likely became public land due to failure to pay taxes upon the place --if its in that shape.--but someone might have owned it thru the family as well too. --best check up BEFORE REMOVING STUFF

Indeed, I'll probably just forget about it then. I'm not going to find "treasure" for other people.

Permission NOT granted "so to speak is what I thought". DUDE you should NOT BE THERE! It is not your property and your lucky to have gotten away from there as many times as you have without lead in your ass... if it was mine,Id shoot. This is not behavior that I agre with or condone on this great website. You need to get permission or let it be.Dont NEED signs to tell you. You ARE trespassing. And for those of you encouraging this... Shame on you. I am not more holier than thou but I know wrong when i see it and this is wrong.Just my 2 cents worth.

NO IF ITS IN OPEN PUBLIC LAND -- get to it -- but if its on private land --either get the owners ok or best let it be -- going o private land without the landowners ok and removing things without their ok --is illegal --your breaking the law twice #1 tresspass and #2 theft * -- most landowners take a very dim veiw of what they see as folks -- stealing stuff from upon their land.

hey just do it the "right" way find out who owns it and ask first --say you were looking at some old maps and found out theres a old homestead on their land and would they mind if you checked it out to see if there was anything "interesting' to find there because you like to metal detect --if they say no --what are you out nothing -- do not tell them where it is exactly-- keep that bit of knowledge to yourself --if need be offer to split stuff with the land owner --part of a pie is better than no pie at all.

Alright, I'll just keep my finds to myself. If I wanted to I could have taken everything but I didn't. Not that I need your approval for anything.

You DONT need my approval. Theres a much stronger force than that man.

I thought someone might be interested in this. I never thought about it as someone's property, it just seemed like unwanted, forgotten about junk. I figured id salvage some of the stuff before it was ruined forever. My aim wasn't to be a thief and try to get one over on somebody.

What if that place belonged to my brother who died 3 weeks ago and I finally get over there to find that its been raide? Wheres the fairness in that? HHHMMM.?
