I'm super stoked!! Hit my parents' small backyard where I found an 1891 Canadian half dime last year, but nothing too special since. Pressed for time, but determined knowing there must be something old there! The house was built in 1880 and was the only house on the block for many years. With 10 minutes to spare, I dug up a coin that I knew was old, but I wasn't familiar with the size or weight. Seemed a tad big to be a V-nickel, but maybe it was! Got home and cleaned it off a bit and still wasn't sure, but I could see a bit of the reverse. After a few minutes research I was able to match the design with a 2 cent piece! Yes! Of course, my caliper measured it at 20mm instead of 23mm which threw me for a loop, but upon further investigation found that the caliper is a piece of crap and is off by 3mm. That's what you get when you spend 99 cents on a caliper!

I will be cleaning it very slow and carefully over the next few details. I think the reverse will come out nicely, but the front seems quite toasted. We'll see!

Nice find, good luck on the clean up. It's 95% copper 5% zinc and tin. I dug one on the salt beach and it cleaned up real well, yours should be great after cleaning:icon_thumright:

Proud of you for knocking another one off your list and making the most of a small window of time and space. Now it's time for a trime!

Congratulations on the 2 Cent piece! I'm still hoping to score one for myself someday.

Be careful is a good coin ..!

Great coin good luck cleaning

Great coin good luck cleaning

Thanks. I'm going to run some test cleaning on a wheat penny I found 5 feet away. Both coins are 95% copper, so I would think they'll be have the same. Slow and steady!

Congratulations Grant! How freaking cool is that?! :notworthy:

She's cleaning up rather nicely! This is after a few hot peroxide baths and tooth picking... more to come till I decide it's been enough. 1866 has been revealed!

Here's the official before and after shots. Overall I'm really happy. I think it can be cleaned more but hot peroxide and tooth picking haven't produced any improvements, and I'm hesitant to do anything more drastic.
