I'm super stoked!! Hit my parents' small backyard where I found an 1891 Canadian half dime last year, but nothing too special since. Pressed for time, but determined knowing there must be something old there! The house was built in 1880 and was the only house on the block for many years. With 10 minutes to spare, I dug up a coin that I knew was old, but I wasn't familiar with the size or weight. Seemed a tad big to be a V-nickel, but maybe it was! Got home and cleaned it off a bit and still wasn't sure, but I could see a bit of the reverse. After a few minutes research I was able to match the design with a 2 cent piece! Yes! Of course, my caliper measured it at 20mm instead of 23mm which threw me for a loop, but upon further investigation found that the caliper is a piece of crap and is off by 3mm. That's what you get when you spend 99 cents on a caliper!

I will be cleaning it very slow and carefully over the next few details. I think the reverse will come out nicely, but the front seems quite toasted. We'll see!

Boy howdy.I like that can't wait to see it all cleaned up.congrats

NICE JOB ~~

Congrats on the 2 center! Cant wait to see it all cleaned up, but take your time. Would hate to see it unrecognizable because of extreme cleaning. Try keeping it dry and using a toothpick and slowly getting the crusty stuff off. Then a tooth bursh until you can see the detail you are looking for. Good luck!

Good one G!! I got my 1st 2 center a few weeks back. Nice to mark that off the list. CONGRATS.. HH

hey Grant...wanna get some lunch next week? i'm buying..

owg..

Exceptional find! Looks like it'll clean up well.

Congrats!

HH!

Thanks all. Yeah, I'm going to be very slow and methodical with cleaning. The front is going to be a crap shoot, but I'm already seeing a date. I'm pretty sure it's either 1865 or 1866. I'll post pics as there's a noticeable change. Gotta hit the property again this weekend, even if just for an hour. It's small, but has been good to me.

That's a nice coin. Hope you have good luck cleaning it.

Good job Grant, I have a pretty good idea from the dirty pics this one is going to turn out quite nice. The edges look quite sharp, and that's the main indicator of corrosion. Even from the dirty pic. I can tell it is a good one. In general the brown crust holds better surprises.

Drop it in the bubbly brother and go for the gusto! It'll clean up well! If there's any green crust on it then use a little lemon juice on it. Bees wax and buff it and you're good to go! :) Great find!!

Congrats on a nice coin. :icon_thumright: Can't wait to see it cleaned. WTG

Awesome coin, look forward to seeing it cleaned.

Grant!,
Ya done good man! really good......Looks like it will clean up VERY nice, can't
wait to see the results..........................HH

Thanks for the kind words everyone. If I'm lucky I hope to spend another hour or 2 searching the area again this weekend. It's a small property so I hope it won't take long to exhaust.
